Druk the Dragon · Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

With it being the Zodiac Year of the Dragon, I just had to design yet another dragon pattern!! This time, I have a low-sew dragon in a cute sitting position that reminds me of the Corgi "sploot".  Anyhow, let's dive into this new design -- meet Druk the Dragon!

Links

Druk the Dragon is a low-sew amigurumi pattern featuring this mythical creature in a sitting pose. The head, body, front legs, and tail are all crocheted in one piece. Don't you just love that cute curve from its forehead to nose?

About the Pattern

  • Low-sew doll
  • Height: 6 inches, length: 8.5 inches
  • Suitable for intermediate crocheters
  • Makes a cute dragon base for further customization

Name

I named this dragon pattern Druk, suggested to me by one of my lovely friends who is from Bhutan!  In Bhutanese, it means "thunder dragon", and what's really cool is that the country of Bhutan is also called DrukYul, which translates to "land of the thunder dragon"!

Customization

This pattern can be easily customized to make a variety of dragon characters!  Off the top of my head, I can think of...
  • Toothless (a Night Fury) from How to Train Your Dragon
  • An adorable version of Smaug from The Hobbit
  • Dragon from Shrek
  • Saphira from Eragon
  • Spyro the Dragon from Spyro
...and other Western dragons!

Recommended Yarn

This stuffed animal can be crocheted with different yarn weights and fibers to create different looks!  I crocheted this design using a polyester yarn (Hobbii Honey Bunny yarn) that creates a chenille and velvet look. The end result is fluffy, plush, squishy, and super soft.

If you'd like to make a smaller, "mini" version of this pattern (it'd make a great figurine for your desk), the same instructions can be used with medium weight #4 yarn paired with a smaller crochet hook, such as 2.75mm. Here are my medium weight yarn recommendations:

Uses

  • Plush toy for children to have imaginary and pretend play with
  • Selling at craft fairs, markets, or boutiques
  • Birthday gift for dragon lovers and enthusiasts
  • Christmas holiday gift
