I've admired Waldorf dolls for the longest time, ever since I was a young child! My father had purchased a doll-making book for me when I was around 2nd or 3rd grade, and it contained instructions on how to sew traditional Waldorf dolls. I lost myself in that book and enjoyed reading and admiring it for so many years!
When my little ones saw a Waldorf doll in a toy shop we visited, I decided to try my hand at crocheting one. With that, I present to you... my Star Baby!
Star Baby is a Waldorf-inspired crochet doll that is low-sew and quick to work up. It features a cute baby in a star shaped outfit, including a cone hat. The arms and legs of the doll are soft and unstuffed, making it a cuddly snuggler especially if made using plush yarn.
They are SO cute, fast, and addiction to make.... you're going to want to make them in all the colors!
There are also many ways to customize Star Baby. For instance:
- Crochet hair (instructions included in the pattern), or leave the baby bald!
- Use different yarn colors to create striping in the clothing
- Embroider facial features like a nose or smile
- Add blush to the cheeks
- Adding elements (see below) to turn it into a baby toy
Make it a Baby Toy
There are two things you can easily add to the Star Baby doll to make it into a developmental baby toy that newborns are sure to love and be fascinated with! That includes: rattles, and crinkle sheets.
Rattle
A small rattle can be inserted into the head of the doll (for a louder sound), or in the body of the doll (for a softer volume) while crocheting those parts. You can either "DIY" your own rattle by getting a mini plastic egg or container, filling it with dry rice or dry beans, and sealing the opening shut with a strong adhesive. If you'd like to purchase a rattle, I recommend a round rattle for the head, and this cylindrical rattle for the body. You can also fit a couple round rattles into the body as well, instead of a cylindrical rattle!
Crinkle Sheets
If you'd like to give your baby the joy of a very satisfying "crinkle" sound, you can add crinkle inserts into the limbs of the body. This would be done while working on the limbs, before closing off the piece with the final (fourth) limb.
Gifting
This doll makes a sweet baby shower gift or gift for an infant or newborn, as long as the eyes are embroidered to avoid choking hazard. The Star Baby also works well as a birthday gift or Christmas stocking stuffer for young children. You can make it for craft fairs and markets too.
Recommended Yarn
This adorable amigurumi is designed with Posh Twist yarn, which is a super plush and soft bulky weight 5 yarn. This is the most durable and non-shedding chenille velvet yarn I've used, so I highly recommend it for projects that might be getting a lot of play and love!
While this pattern is designed with plush yarn for that plush, squishy look, you can also try it with other types of yarns, such as cotton or acrylic. If using a thinner yarn, your amigurumi will end up with a smaller finished size. While it might not be a snuggly size for little ones, it can serve as a cute keychain, hanging ornament, or bag charm. To make a keychain, simply add clasps and rings with this inexpensive keychain making kit and you can clip the doll onto diaper bags, backpacks, purses, and more.
Pattern Test
As usual, this pattern has been tested by a team of crocheters ranging in experience to ensure that the pattern is error-free and easy to read for all! A variety of yarn types, yarn weights, colors, and finishing touches have been used to create unique looks!
Testers reported 1:20 hours to 2 hours to complete the doll.
