Rumi the Red Panda · Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

I can't believe it has taken me THIS long to finally start crocheting amigurumi with blanket yarn.  It has been 11 years since I started my amigurumi journey... and I've only just now discovered the joys of blanket yarn!  Better late than never, right?

I'd like you all to meet my very first creation using blanket yarn: Rumi the Red Panda!  With Bernat Blanket Yarn in the fun pastel colors of  pink, white, and grey, I decided to whip up a furry friend.  I'm quite happy with the result, because it not only was SO fast to work up using super bulky yarn and a large 6mm hook, the finished doll is unbelievably soft and squishy!

Rumi’s design features a pointed nose with a beautiful forehead curve (check out my amigurumi face shaping tutorial here), ragdoll arms and legs, rounded hands for children to easily hold onto, and a long striped tail.  You can customize Rumi using the traditional red panda colors of red, brown, and white, or you can opt for a pastel look with the pink, grey, and white that I selected.  Different yarn fibers, such as velvet, can also be used instead of blanket yarn for a soft look!

If you'd like, check out the short video preview below to see Rumi as well as his friend, Flynn the Fox.

This pattern is very beginner-friendly as it really only uses the basic amigurumi stitches of single crochet, increase, decrease, and the magic ring.  Here's a photo of him before assembly, with the pieces ready to be sewn together.

My little girl took an immediate liking to Rumi, too.  Doesn't he look so big in toddler hands?  Lena loves that he's a very huggable amigurumi!  Rumi is a wonderful addition to her nursery as well, which is now looking a lot more woodland, safari, and zoo-themed with all the animal dolls!  Either way, I would totally make Rumi again for other kids because he's gender neutral and a great gift for both baby girls and boys.

For some size reference, Rumi is about 15 inches in height!  That's an extra-large amigurumi compared to what I normally make.  The only doll I've designed who is bigger than Rumi (that I can think of right now) is my Bluebell Bunny, who stands at 17 inches tall.  Bluebell was made using medium weight yarn, so her stitch count was WAY higher than Rumi's...making Rumi such a quick project in comparison!

I'm excited to share that Rumi has a best buddy named Flynn the Fox.  If you'd like to see my daughter third-wheeling their hangout time, check out Flynn & Rumi's shared page!  A discounted pattern bundle for both dolls is linked on that page.

Here are the differences with Flynn, though: he requires a LOT less sewing!  Flynn's arms, legs, and tail are all attached to his body using crochet methods, so you'll only need to sew the ears to the head, and the head to the body.

When I posted Rumi on Instagram, I got a few different comments mentioning how he looks a lot like the Pokemon Stufful and Bewear.  I honestly only know the first generation of Pokemon (that says a lot about my age, haha) but I think Rumi would make a great collector's item for fans of Stufful and Bewear!  I'm also seeing that red pandas are more and more common in media now, such as in the Japanese animated comedy "Aggretsuko", and in the upcoming Disney movie "Turning Red"!
