How To Know If Your Garage Floor Is Adequately Protected

Garages are also an important part of our households. What is more, they are often a gateway to our home, so it is important to always keep them clean, safe, and protected. To that end, the first step to protecting it is to look for the clues if your garage floor is adequately protected, and afterward give it the quality coating protection that it deserves!

Why garage floor protection is important

The floor in your garage is exposed to heavy dirt all the time every day. Imagine what all you can bring into your garage on your car’s tires: chemicals, dirt, automotive grease, oils, and other fluids; and in winter it is worst - you bring a lot of salt, and not a natural one, but a chemical salt. This salt is highly abrasive to the floor and in the worst case, it is brought into your house from your shoes. On top of that, overly cold or hot temperatures also strain the floor, causing cracks, erosion, and lead to its demise eventually.

Taking this into account, it is clear that there is much that your garage floor has to go through. However, you can save the floor if you consider a few ways of its protection. Before we get to that part, make sure you first check if your floor is adequately protected!

Check if it repels liquid

Your garage floor should always be sealed with a layer of a substance that repels external dirt and liquid. One of the easiest ways to check if your floor is adequately protected and sealed is to pour some liquid over it, such as water, for instance. Next, wait for a few minutes and see if the water remained at the same place or it was soaked by the concrete. In the case water went into small water beads, it means that your floor has a protective layer of coating over it.

If, however, the water is soaked up completely, or even a little, that means that your floor is not protected at all, or maybe poorly protected. In both cases, you should seriously consider getting a quality garage floor coating. There are multiple benefits of keeping your garage floor adequately protected.

For instance, once you coat your garage floor, it will become stronger and more durable. This is mainly because the floor will become a lot more resistant to chemicals and stains. What is more, it will even become abrasive-resistant to an extent. All this has a great impact on the longevity of the garage floor and its quality as well!

On the other hand, a coated floor is also safer and easier to clean. For example, it will be less slippery, but at the same time easier to clean the stains since they will always stay on the surface instead of being soaked up by the floor. With these benefits, you can easily make your garage experience much better and always keep it in a good condition!

Check its color

Floors usually come in several different paints and textures. However, no matter what color your garage floor is, make sure you look for signs of discoloration. Discoloration can be a consequence of moisture intrusion, abrasion, or physical damage.

Nevertheless, the traces of discoloration will tell you that your floor is either improperly protected, or has become quite old and needs a new coating. In both ways, make sure you consider the idea of investing in new floor coating to protect it from further damage, prevent major repairs, and also make it safer and cleaner.

Look for the cracks

No matter how strong concrete can be, it cannot resist the earth’s movements. What is more, concrete floors are susceptible to fractures and cracks. These cracks can sometimes damage the coating. However, without any coating and sealing, the floor can be even more susceptible to damage. One of the ways of checking if your garage floor is protected well, or if it needs a new coating, is to look for the cracks.

For instance, if you are able to count the cracks, then this can be the major sign that your floor needs a coating. There are different kinds of coating, from Polyaspartic, Acrylic, Latex, Urethane, and many other kinds. Many of these can provide you with heavy-duty protection, but at the same time offer you plenty of different stylistic options that can match your garage interior best!

Make sure you consider these pieces of advice and then give your garage floor a quick check-up to see if you can give it better protection! Good luck!
