Baby Squirrel in Acorn · Free Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Crocheting tiny amigurumi can be pretty fun!  I recently designed a tiny, baby squirrel, and am quite pleased with how cute this little guy turned out.  If you'd like, check out the short video preview below to see him in action!

He was very quick to work up, and only stands at 2.5 inches (6 cm) in height.  Definitely one of my smallest amigurumi projects to date, but I just love his pocket-sized self!

Here's a look at him inside of the Acorn Box, which is also a free pattern on my blog.  It works up very quickly with super bulky yarn (or you can hold your yarn doubled).  And, you can easily hide your little critter inside of this acorn house and put the lid on.

I think he'd make an adorable gift and play set for any little one as a gender neutral toy.

If you'd like to make some more mini forest critters, check out the free Baby Mouse in Moses Basket pattern!  The mouse also fits nicely inside of the Acorn Box.

You can also PIN this pattern for later on your Crochet board!

Intro:

The Baby Squirrel in Acorn pattern includes instructions for a miniature, newborn squirrel and his acorn home.  The Acorn is large enough for the little critter to hide within, making this a fun pretend play toy set for young children.  This is a very small but quick amigurumi project.  It makes a wonderful gender neutral (unisex) gift for boy sand girls alike, and is great as decor for woodland themed nursery rooms.

Size:

Height: 2.5 inches (6 cm)

Level of Difficulty:

★★★☆☆  Intermediate, due to having to sew some small pieces.  Requires familiarity with stitches used (below), attaching yarn, attaching safety eyes, and sewing parts together.

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch

  2. Pull a loop of light brown yarn through.
  3. Ch 4.
  4. Insert hook back under the st in R4 of the head for a sl st.
  5. FO and weave in the ends.
  6. Repeat on the other side of the head to make the second ear.

BODY

R2: Inc around. (12 sts)

R3: (Sc, inc) x 6. (18 sts)

LEGS (x2)

Use light brown yarn.
  1. Ch 6.
  2. Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each of the next 4 ch.
  3. FO with a long tail for sewing to the body later.

ARMS (x2)

Use light brown yarn.
  1. Ch 5.
  2. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Sl st in each of the next 3 ch.
  3. FO with a long tail for sewing to the body later.

TAIL

Use darker brown yarn.

R1: In MR, ch 3 and dc 12. (12 sts)

R2: Ch 3, dc around. (12 sts)

R3: Ch 3, (dc 4, dec) x 2. (10 sts)

R4: Ch 3, (dc 3, dec) x 2. (8 sts)

R5: Ch 3, (dc 2, dec) x 2. (6 sts)

FO with a long tail for sewing to the body later.

  1. Sew the two arms and legs to the body.
  2. Bend over the top part of the tail to create a curve, and use the tail-color yarn and a yarn needle to sew a few stitches to the fold of the tail. This will make it stay in a curved shape.
  3. Sew the curved tail to the back of the body.
  4. Stuff the body.
  5. Sew the head over the body’s opening.
