I recently designed this adorable set of "Flipper Friends", and I can't wait to show you how to make your very own!

Isn't this underwater crew just too stinking cute? I love their plush and chubby bodies!

    About the Pattern

    • Super fast to work up (only 30 minutes for the whale!)
    • Easy and beginner-friendly
    • Includes a step-by-step video tutorial
    • No sewing needed
    • Stashbuster project; great for using up leftover yarn scraps
    • Tiny and cute at only 4 inches (10 cm) in length

    Modifications

The main pattern allows you to crochet the whale's body, its flippers, and tail.  The bonus instructions to the pattern allow you to turn the whale into either a Narwhal or Dolphin!

Narwhal: Just add a horn, and you'll have the unicorn of the ocean!

Dolphin: Just add a fin on the back and a cute dolphin nose, and you'll have this adorable and intelligent little sea creature!

    Uses

    • Toys for children
    • Nursery decor for baby rooms (can be made into a nursery mobile for an ocean, sea, or underwater-themed nursery!)
    • Party favors for kids birthdays
    • Valentine's Day gifts for an entire class of students
    • Unisex, gender neutral present
    • Keychain charm
    • Selling at craft fairs or markets
    • Therapy tool / sensory fidget toy / stress ball (for people with anxiety, ADHD, or autism)

    Customizations

You can use any yarn fiber, from cotton to chenille velvet, to create different textures…or any weight to create different sizes!  This project looks great in all different yarn colors, including solids, ombre, self-striping, and variegated yarn. Customization is easy by adding crocheted appliques, bows, beads, buttons, eyes/facial features, and more.

    Yarn

To make your whales exactly like mine, try going with some chunky chenille velvet yarn and a large (5mm) hook. I used Hobbii's Baby Snuggle Yarn and Honey Bunny Yarn. They're very similar in weight and feel, and are perfect for a soft and squishy amigurumi. For more information about the Baby Snuggle Yarn, feel free to check out my Baby Snuggle Yarn Review!

You can also use thinner yarn, such as medium worsted weight or DK yarn, and pair it with a smaller hook. This will give you a tinier, keychain-sized amigurumi!
