Lola Hair Clip · Easy & Free Crochet Pattern

Ready for a quick and easy 10-minute crochet project?  Let's crochet a beautiful hair clip with different styles and flower embellishments!

    Links

TWO Edging Styles + TWO Flowers?

The pattern features two different oval clip styles:
    • Lacy Edging (looks feminine and sweet)
    • Neat Edging (looks cute and tidy)

Also included are two different floral appliques:
    • 5-petal cherry blossom
    • 6-petal puff stitch flower

You can easily mix-and-match to create the exact clip you want!  My personal favorite combination is the Lacy Edging with the 5-petal cherry blossom.

It only takes 5-10 minutes to finish?

This sweet accessory is SO FAST!  It literally takes just about 5 minutes to crochet the two rounds for the hair clip, and maybe an additional few minutes to crochet a flower and sew it on.  It becomes a no-sew project if you just hot-glue the flower on!

    Is it for beginners?

This crochet project is very beginner friendly.  The PDF pattern includes step-by-step photo references, and I also have a free video tutorial for new crocheters to follow along with confidence.

    Style & Aesthetic

I would describe the style and aesthetic of these clips to be...
    • Cottage / Cottagecore
    • Maidcore
    • Kawaii
    • Mori Kei
    • Victorian
    • Woodland
    • Pastel
    • Goth
    • Classic Lolita
    • Sweet Lolita

    Yarn

The yarn I used for designing this pattern is the Hobbii Friends Cotton yarn.  It is a fingering weight yarn, which worked nicely paired with a 2.25mm crochet hook.  It is most suitable to use this super fine (weight 1) yarn or even something thinner, like lace or embroidery thread.  Thin strands will produce a more delicate-looking hair clip!

I also wanted to add that this project requires very little yarn, so it's a great way to use up yarn scraps!

    Customization

These lovely hair clips can be customized in many different ways.  Other than choosing the edging style and flower style that you want, you can also...

    • Try different yarn color combinations
    • Try different weights of yarn/thread
    • Add different crochet shapes/appliques (maybe a bear instead of a flower, or a different type of flower!)
    • Attach beads or buttons

    Gifting & Selling

This trendy accessory is suitable for all ages of girls and women.  That includes babies, toddlers, kids, children, teens, and adults!  I love matching with my daughter, and using a subtle hair accessory to do so counts too!

The Lola Hair Clip is also perfect to make as a last minute...
    • birthday gift
    • bridesmaid gift / bachelorette party gift
    • friendship gift
    • party favors
    • holiday gift
    • cosplay
    • craft fairs / markets

    Crochet Instructions

Notes: A video tutorial is available for this pattern. Please note that it includes full instructions for the hair clip as well as the 5-petal cherry blossom flower.  (The 6-petal puff stitch flower is not included.)

    PART 1: CLIP

    Notes for R1:
    1. Insert a multiple of 3 sts if you want to crochet the clip with a Lacy Edging.
    2. Insert the same number of sts on each side of the clip. For example, I inserted 18 sts on each side for a total of 36 sts in the round.

R1: Start with a sc at the upper-left side of the clip with its opening facing the right (see video tutorial, or photo references in the PDF pattern). Cross over to the bottom edge to begin sc around the entire outer edge of the clip. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Without FO, continue with R2.

R2: Pick from one of the two methods (“Lacy” or “Neat” Edging) below.

    LACY EDGING
    • Note: Each repetition takes 3 sts.
    • Ch 3, sk a st, sl st in next st. Sl st in next st.
    • Repeat Step#1 around.
    • FO with a tail to weave in the ends later.

    NEAT EDGING
    • Sl st around.
    • FO with a tail and weave in the ends.

    PART 2: EMBELLISHMENT

Choose from one of the two flower patterns below.

    5-PETAL BLOSSOM
Petal: (YO, insert hook, YO, pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops) x 3. Finally, YO and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
    • R1: In MR, sc 10. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Pull the ring tight.
    • R2: (Ch 2, insert Petal in same st, ch 2, sl st in next st. Sl st in next st) x 5.
    • FO with a long tail for sewing to the clip.

    6-PETAL PUFF FLOWER
Petal: Ch 3, (YO, insert hook in same st, YO, and pull up a tall loop to match the height of the beginning ch-3) x 3. There should be 6 loops on your hook. In the next st: (YO, insert hook in next st, YO, and pull up a tall loop) x 3. YO and pull through all loops on the hook. Ch 3 and sl st in the same st.
    • R1: Insert 12 sc in a magic ring. Pull tightly. (12 sts) Sl st with the first sc in R1 to join.
    • R2: Make a Petal x 6.
    • FO with a long tail for sewing to the clip.

Congratulations on finishing your hair clip!
