Growing your own cannabis – the biggest pros and cons

If you’re a cannabis enthusiast and you also happen to have a green thumb, you may be wondering if growing your own cannabis plants might be a better idea than purchasing cannabis-derived products from dispensaries or online retailers. With the relaxation of regulations on cannabis cultivation and consumption, more countries now allow users to purchase and grow cannabis seeds at home, be it regular, feminized or autoflowering cannabis seeds, so this activity has become increasingly popular in recent times.

However, just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should do it. If you’ve never grown a marijuana plant before, you should know that there are both pros and cons to take into consideration. Whether you consume marijuana for recreational or medical purposes, being aware of both sides of the coin will help you decide if cultivating your own weed is indeed a worthwhile endeavour for you.

The pros

From a financial perspective, growing weed at home is definitely preferable to purchasing it from a retailer. Regardless of country or provider, cannabis products don’t come cheap. And if you’re purchasing cannabis from premium brands that offer superior quality, this might leave an even bigger dent in your budget.

By comparison, growing weed outdoors only requires you to purchase cannabis seeds and then learn how to cultivate and tend to the plants as they develop. Besides, if you grow autoflowering seeds, you can harvest the plants in as little as seven to ten weeks, so they’re perfect if time is an important factor for you. Indoor growth is a little bit more complicated than that and might require a bigger initial investment as you’ll have to purchase a basic setup that includes soil and fertilizer, lights, a thermometer, an exhaust fan and other supplies that will help you adjust the climate and airflow. But even with all these extra expenses, you’ll still be able to save money in the long run.

The quality and safety of the cannabis you consume are also major issues to consider. Although cannabis products should undergo rigorous testing and inspections to ensure customer safety, you have no way of knowing if producers comply with these standards, so you might end up buying sub-par or even harmful goods. Growing your cannabis allows you to have control over the entire cultivation process, from the seeds you choose to the nutrients you use, so you’ll know that your plants are healthy and safe.

When it comes to the variety of choice, planting your own seeds is the better option by far. By the latest count, there are over 700 different cannabis strains in the world, and as you may assume, there’s no way a dispensary can provide cannabis-derived products that cover all these strains. But you can purchase the strains you want from a seed store and grow the marijuana variety that best suits your needs. And if you find a strain that you particularly like, you can produce the same plant with the exact same characteristics over and over again through cloning or by keeping a female plant.

And let’s not forget about the educational and recreational aspects. Cultivating marijuana in your own garden will not only help you expand your knowledge of this amazing plant, but it can also turn into a fun and relaxing hobby. And if you decide one day to take your hobby one step further and turn it into a business, it’s going to be much easier for you to break into this thriving industry.

The cons

As tempting as growing marijuana plants at home might be, there are also a few cons to take into account. And the first aspect that you need to be aware of is marijuana legislation. Even though the rules on cannabis consumption and cultivation have eased in recent years, you need to keep in mind that different countries have different laws in this respect. While you may be allowed to grow marijuana in your area of residence, there may be restrictions on the number of plants that you can cultivate or the amount of cannabis you can keep or commercialize from each crop. You need to do your due diligence and get informed about the cannabis legislation in your location to make sure you’re not breaking any laws.

Sometimes, it’s not the authorities that will stop you from going about your planting endeavours, but the people around you. Your neighbours may not be too supportive of your new hobby given that the smell cannabis plants produce during the flowering phase can be quite off-putting. You may end up getting complaints from your neighbours or your tenant may prohibit you from growing cannabis on their property.

You should also think about the time and effort you have to put in to produce your own cannabis plants. Although this doesn’t require advanced botanical knowledge and skills, it does come with a learning curve. For someone who has never tended to a plant in their entire lives, the process can feel quite tedious and complicated. Once you’ve started the cultivation process, you’ll have to tend to your plants constantly if you want them to grow strong and healthy.

In the end, growing cannabis yourself is certainly not as convenient as walking into a dispensary and choosing a ready-made product from the shelf. If comfort and ease of access are what you’re after, it’s probably best to research different cannabis retailers and find one that provides the types of products you’re interested in. This is going to be a lot easier than going through all the trouble of growing marijuana from seeds. With dispensaries offering an ever-increasing range of cannabis products, this is the go-to option for most cannabis consumers these days.

Final thoughts

Cultivating cannabis in your garden or in an indoor setting is an idea worth considering if you enjoy the benefits that this highly potent plant provides. However, you should know what the cultivation process implies before giving it a try as there are both advantages and disadvantages to it. It’s up to you to decide which aspects weigh heavier in the balance to ensure you’re making the right choice.
