Mosaic Goldfish · Free Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

I know, I know... ANOTHER no-sew pattern to add into my extensive "no sew" crochet pattern collection? Is it getting annoying yet? Are all these no-sews making you want to sew now? 😂

Just kidding, I know you're gonna love this one because it's a great feeling to finish a project without ever having to touch a yarn needle, haha!

Let's say hello to the Mosaic Goldfish!

    About the Pattern

    • Includes 4 scale designs (1 is included in the free version)
    • Stashbuster project; great for using up leftover yarn scraps
    • Makes a great keychain with thin yarn
    • Makes a great plush with blanket or bulky velvet yarn
    • Super versatile and customizable
    • Color combinations are endless
    • Available as a FREE video tutorial for 1 of 4 scale designs!

    Four Scale Designs

Below is a look at the four different scale designs that you can choose from when crocheting the fish's mid-section.  The free pattern version includes the first and easiest scale design (blue fish on the upper left corner), which consists of just single crochets in the back loops only!

    Uses

    • Keychain for a backpack, lanyard, purse, or bag (just add a keyring!)
    • Pretend play toys for children
    • Unisex, gender neutral present
    • Selling at craft fairs or markets
    • Therapy tool / sensory fidget toy (for people with anxiety, ADHD, or autism; the puff stitch scale design and textured tail provides sensory stimulation)
    • For charity or random acts of kindness
    • Nursery mobile or decor for baby rooms
    • Party favors for kids birthdays
    • Valentine's Day gifts for your student's class (scroll down to get free printable Vday gift tags!)
    • Christmas stocking stuffers

    Testing

This pattern has been carefully tested by a team of crocheters of varying levels prior to publication.  Pattern testing is to ensure that the pattern is suitable for beginners, free of errors, and easy to understand.  Testers reported taking 45 minutes to 2+ hours to complete their fish, with the average time being 1 hour.  This pattern has been tested with different yarn weights and colors, showing that it is versatile and looks lovely with a range of colors!

    Sizes

Using different yarn weights and hook sizes will create different finished measurements for your fish.  For instance, using a thin fingering or sock yarn (weight #1 yarn) and a small 2.25mm crochet hook will produce a small fish that's the perfect size for a keychain.  However, using a thicker worsted weight yarn (medium weight #4 yarn) and a larger 3.25mm hook will create a bigger fish.  You can even use super bulky weight yarn to create an extra large fish!

The main consideration is to make sure you use a suitable hook size for your yarn that does not produce gaps between stitches.  You'll want to keep your stitches tight so that stuffing does not show from between them!

    Recommended Yarn

You can use any type of yarn weight and fiber to make your fish!  I experimented with a variety of types.  I think that the best yarn to show off the texture of your fish's beautiful scales would be a yarn that has crisp stitch definition, meaning one that isn't fuzzy or textured.  For instance, using 100% cotton like Hobbii's Friends Cotton 8/4 yarn really shows off the scales.  I highly recommend using their solid colors and switching yarn colors to create beautiful patterns and color changes!

Alternatively, you can also use self-striping, ombre, or variegated yarn.  For instance, my blue fish above is crocheted with LB's Mandala Watercolor yarn, and I love how it has some white speckles mixed into the different shades of blue!  I also loved using DGY's Sparkle Worsted yarn (use code SWEETSOFTIES15 for 15% off) in the color 'Citrine' to crochet this golden beauty below.
