I had fun using a beautiful skein of self-striping yarn that reminded me of the starry night sky. I envisioned creating a jellyfish that swims and finds home in the skies... and here's the finished design! It's the Galaxy Jellyfish, and it's a no-sew pattern that I'm adding to my extensive "no sew" crochet pattern collection.
The Galaxy jellyfish has both curly tentacles and thin, straight tentacles, giving it a realistic and lovely texture. You can have fun with adding some beautiful specialty plastic safety eyes, such as this sparkly amigurumi eyes set I used!

Sizes
Using different yarn weights and hook sizes will create different finished measurements for your fish. For instance, using a thin fingering or sock yarn (weight #1 yarn) and a small 2.25mm crochet hook will produce a small jellyfish that's a good size for a keychain. However, using a thicker worsted weight yarn (medium weight #4 yarn) and a larger 3.25mm hook will create a larger jelly fish. You can even use super bulky weight yarn to create an extra big jelly!The main consideration is to make sure you use a suitable hook size for your yarn that does not produce gaps between stitches. You'll want to keep your stitches tight so that stuffing does not show from between them!
Recommended Yarn
You can use any type of yarn weight and fiber to make your jellyfish plush! I used DGY's Sparkle Worsted yarn (get 15% off with code SWEETSOFTIES15) in the color 'Tidal Pool' to crochet this beauty.
Pictured below is my jellyfish alongside a used skein in the middle, which was all the leftover yarn from this project. The skein on the right with the tag is brand new and untouched. One new skein of Sparkle Worsted Weight yarn is 75 yards, so as you can see, it doesn't take a whole lot of yardage to make this jellyfish! Having 50 yards of yarn should be more than enough.
For colors, using self-striping, ombre, variegated, or other multi-colored yarn can show off the beautiful color changes naturally. However, you are also welcome to use solid colors for the entire jellyfish. Or, you can use one color for the body, and add in a couple more colors for some of the tentacles.

Insert 14mm plastic safety eyes between R12-R13, 8 sts apart. (SAFETY NOTE: if this jellyfish toy is for a baby or small young child, sew the eyes using yarn/thread to avoid choking hazard with small plastic parts.) If desired, sew eyelashes and a mouth on your jellyfish.
CURLY TENTACLE (x6)
Use the 4mm hook.R1: Ch 36.
R2: Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Insert another sc in same st. Insert 2 sc in each of the next 26 ch. Then, sc in each of the remaining ch.
Fasten off with a long tail for attaching to the base later. Make a total of 6 curly tentacles.
THIN TENTACLE (x4)
Use the 4mm hook.Ch 26.
Fasten off with a long tail for attaching to the base later. Make a total of 4 thin tentacles.
BASE
Use the 3.25mm hook.R1: In MR, sc 6. (6)
R2: Inc around. (12)
R3: (Sc, inc) x 6. (18)
R4: (Sc 2, inc) x 6. (24)

Do not FO; pull the loop long so it does not come undone. You will now pause to attach the tentacles to the base before stitching the base to the head.
Finishing
- Pull the starting and ending yarn tails from each curly tentacle through the right-side of the Base’s R4, knotting them securely in the wrong side.
- With tentacles pointing outwards, place the base over the head’s opening. Since you have not yet fastened off from the base, use the 3.25mm hook to continue on by inserting a sl st to join the base to a st in the head, going through the Head’s BLO and the Base’s FLO. Then, sl st around the entire jelly (going through the Head’s BLO and Base’s FLO) so that you are attaching the base to the head. Make sure you stuff the jellyfish before you close it up completely. There should be a total of 36 sl st joining the Head and Base.
- Then, crochet this “FRILL” section in the unworked FLO of the Head. Ch 2. (Hdc+dc in first st. Dc+hdc in next st. Sl st in next st) around.
- Fasten off and weave in the ends.
