Maternity & Nursing Bras: Everything You Need To Know

There’s a lot of mystery surrounding maternity bras—why do you need them? When should you buy them? And how do you choose one that fits just right?

You’ve got enough questions on your mind about becoming a new mom. Buying a bra shouldn’t be one of them. It’s time to clear up the matter.

You may notice that during your pregnancy, the size of your breasts changes. This continues even after you give birth. The alterations in breast size are due to fluctuating hormone levels (specifically, estrogen and progesterone) and the development of your milk ducts.

In this article, we’ve set out to answer the most common questions about wearing bras during your pregnancy:

The Difference Between Maternity Bras & Nursing Bras

Maternity bras are worn to accommodate your changing body. Soon after you find out that you’re expecting, you may start to notice that your favorite bras aren’t fitting the way they used to.

What makes a maternity bra different from a regular bra? A few key differences include:
  • Wire-free construction to prevent strain or discomfort
  • Flexible fabric that will expand as your body changes
  • Cotton lining that is soft and supportive
  • More back adjusters for more flexibility

Nursing bras are designed to make breastfeeding easier for new moms. They feature cups that unclip from the straps; you can easily pull down the bra to breastfeed your baby (without taking off the entire garment).  Like maternity bras, they’re designed with comfort and support in mind. The fabric is soft and comfortable, so it won’t irritate sore skin.  Along with nursing bras, it is also important to be prepared with nursing-friendly nightgowns

When To Buy a Maternity Bra or Nursing Bra

You’ve just found out that you’re expecting—is it time to buy a maternity bra?

It’s a good idea to go shopping during your first trimester. You want to have a comfortable bra picked out before the most drastic changes take place in your second trimester.

Did you know? Many women experience leakage weeks before their babies are born. The substance is called colostrum; it’s breast milk that’s full of antibodies and nutrients. In the weeks leading up to your pregnancy, you can switch to a nursing bra with absorbent pads to prevent shirt stains.

If you have more questions about the changes your body may experience, consider seeking out pregnancy support services.

Choosing Your Bra

First, we recommend selecting a bra with wide shoulder straps. This will evenly distribute the weight of your breasts, which helps relieve back and shoulder pain. Choose straps that are at least 1” wide.

Next, choose a bra that fits comfortably on the tightest set of hooks. Then, as your pregnancy progresses and your breasts and ribs expand, you can use the bra on the looser hooks. This helps you get more usage out of your maternity bra.

Just because you’re buying a comfortable bra doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice style. Buy a bra that makes you feel beautiful, one with lace, a gorgeous pattern, or an eye-popping color.

Don’t underestimate the effects of an ill-fitting bra. With the right bra, you can make your pregnancy a more comfortable experience. Ease shoulder pain, soothe your skin, and prevent leakage with a maternity or nursing bra!
