Cake Gift Box (Free Crochet Pattern)

Dear fellow crocheters,

I'm excited to share with you a special crochet project of mine... the Cake Gift Box!

I designed this mini container as a gender reveal "cake" to surprise my husband!  Commonly, the expecting parent(s) would bite into a cupcake (or cut into a cake) and find out whether they're having a boy or a girl based on the color of frosting that is inside.  Blue for boy, pink for girl.

Being the amigurumi enthusiast that I am, I decided to put my own, yarny spin on this gender reveal tradition.  Thus, I created this tiny cupcake that can open up, and inside I'd stuff a crocheted bow with the color associated to our baby's gender.

Oh, and just for a bit of fun -- I created an "Old Wives Tales Gender Prediction Chart" for my husband and I to fill out beforehand!

If you're interested in watching how that went down, along with my husband's reaction, check out our video below!

All that aside, this cake gift box can be used for other purposes too, of course!

It's a sweet, little amigurumi dessert that you can open up and store tiny treasures inside of.  A zero-calorie treat that lasts forever, and features a little strawberry on top of a dollop of whipped cream.  You can easily customize it by using different yarn colors, adding sprinkles, or attaching beads.

There are many ways to use it as a gift, such as: Valentine’s Day Gift box containing a chocolate treat, or engagement ring box.  Or, as a gender reveal box like what I did, by adding in either a pink or blue item (scroll down for a bonus hair bow or bowtie pattern included in this pattern)!  You can even add tiny amigurumi projects in this box instead of getting a gift bag or giftwrap!

Bonus Pattern: Bow
Want to add something cute inside of your cake container?  If you plan to use this as a Gender Reveal idea, you can do what I did, which is to crochet either a blue bowtie (for a boy) or a pink hairbow (for a girl) and place it inside of the cake container.  It is a sweet surprise that has zero calories, and you can keep it forever too!

Use pink or blue colored yarn.

  1. In MR, insert 3 tr, ch 5, sl st in ring.  Ch 5, insert 3 tr in ring, ch 5, sl st in ring.
  2. Fasten off with a long tail to create the center of the bow by wrapping it around the bow many times.
  3. Weave in the ends, and it will be ready to place inside of your cake!

~ FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS ~

  1. Cut out a cardboard circle that fits in the base of the cake bottom. Place the cardboard circle inside. This provides sturdiness and helps the bottom keep shape.
  2. Sew the strawberry on top of the the whipped cream.
  3. Sew the whipped cream on the center of the cake top.
  4. Put the top over the bottom, and you’re done!

And that's it!  Congratulations on finishing your Cake Gift Box!
