Dear fellow crocheters, 

I'm really excited to share with you this beautiful headband design that I created for my daughter!  I am so happy with how it turned out.

As you can probably tell from my growing number of baby patterns, I just *love* making accessories for my little girl.

This flower crown design really gives off a romantic vibe with its cluster of roses in soft, pastel pink.  I also love its simple, minimalist, and vintage flair.  The girly-girl in me is seriously considering making another one for myself as well, because who doesn't like matching Mommy-and-Me accessories with their little one?!  

I do have to say, though... I don't think I can wear it as well as my little Lena Rose.  She really is a sweet Rosie Bud (that's my mama's nickname for her) in this crown!  

I also have to add -- this headband makes a beautiful last-gift for so many occasions!  Baby showers, birthdays, Mother’s Day, Christmas, holidays...  It’s also suitable as a fast and easy product to stock for craft fairs, or as photo props for photographers.

Introduction:

The Lacy Flower Crown is a sweet and dainty accessory with or without the flower and leaf embellishments.  This headband gives off a romantic vibe, and is also simple, minimalist, and has a vintage flair.  It’s a very quick crochet pattern and great stashbuster project that can be made with scrap yarn.  The 3D roses have multiple layers, and their sizes are easily adjustable simply based on the hook size you use.  You’ll have fun arranging the appliques and trying different color combinations for stunning results.  This headband makes a beautiful last-gift for baby showers, birthdays, Mother’s Day, Christmas, and holidays.  You can make it as a Mommy and Me gift too!  It’s also suitable as a fast and easy product to stock for craft fairs, or as photo props for photographers.  The PDF pattern file includes complete written instructions for this DIY headband, flower, and leaf tutorial, photo references for the crocheted parts, and a link to the complete step-by-step video tutorial.

Newborn, baby, toddler, child, and adult 

(Any size, as length is easily adjustable)

Requires familiarity with stitches used (below) 

Stitches/Terms Used:

• FO: fasten off 
• Sk: skip 
• Ch: chain 
• Sl st: slip stitch 
• Sc: single crochet 
• Hdc: half double crochet 
• Dc: double crochet
• Tr: triple (treble) crochet

Materials:

• Light (3) weight yarn (I used Patons Grace yarn in white and blush)
• 5mm crochet hook for headband and large flower
• 2.75mm, 3.75mm, and 4mm hooks for smaller flowers and leaves
• Scissors

~ CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS ~

HEADBAND

Use the 5mm hook with light weight (3) yarn.

1. Make an even number of chains to match the length that you’d like for your headband.  (For reference, I made 64 chains to reach a 12” length for my baby girl’s head size.) 
   Note: Use the Hat Sizing & Measurements Reference Chart for average head circumferences of different age groups. 
2. Ch 2 more. 
3. In 3rd ch from hook, insert a hdc. (Sk a st, sc+dc in next st) across. Insert hdc in last st. 
4. Ch 1, insert a sc in the side of the headband. Then insert sc across each of the stitches along the bottom of the headband. Insert a sc in the other side of the headband. 
5. FO with a long tail to use as a “tying strap.” 
6. Attach yarn to the other end of the headband, making sure it’s as long as the other side.  Tie it securely, then fasten off and weave in the end.

Note: For the roses, you are welcome to follow the "Original Rose" pattern using different size hooks (e.g., 2.75mm, 3.75mm, 5mm) for different size roses.  Or, you can also use the alternative patterns below for a slight variation in your roses.

ORIGINAL ROSE

Use a 3.75mm hook with the light weight (3) yarn.

1. Foundation #1: In MR, sc 5. Join with a sl st to the first sc. 
2. Petal Layer #1: *(Ch 1, dc 3, ch 1, sl st) in same st to create a petal. Sl st in next st* repeat around in each of the 5 sc. This yields 5 petals. 
3. Foundation #2: *Ch 3 and turn the flower over to its backside. Sl st in the furthest loop in petal from your hook* around, creating 5 ch-3 foundation gaps. 
4. Petal Layer #2: *Sl st, ch 1, dc 4, ch 1, sl st* in each of the ch-3 gaps. 
5. Foundation #3: *Ch 4 and turn the flower over to its backside. Sl st in the furthest loop in petal from your hook* around, creating 5 ch-4 foundation gaps. 
6. Petal Layer #3: *Sl st, ch 1, dc 5, ch 1, sl st* in each of the ch-4 gaps. 
7. FO with a long tail for sewing later.

SMALL ROSE VARIATION

Use a 2.75mm hook with the light weight (3) yarn.

1. Foundation #1: In MR, sc 5. Join with a sl st to the first sc. 
2. Petal Layer #1: *(Ch 1, hdc 3, ch 1, sl st) in same st to create a petal. Sl st in next st* repeat around in each of the 5 sc. This yields 5 petals. 
3. Foundation #2: *Ch 3 and turn the flower over to its backside. Sl st in the furthest loop in petal from your hook* around, creating 5 ch-3 foundation gaps. 
4. Petal Layer #2: *Sl st, ch 1, hdc 4, ch 1, sl st* in each of the ch-3 gaps. 
5. Foundation #3: *Ch 4 and turn the flower over to its backside. Sl st in the furthest loop in petal from your hook* around, creating 5 ch-4 foundation gaps.

LARGE ROSE VARIATION (6 petals)

Use a 5mm hook with the light weight (3) yarn.

1. Foundation #1: In MR, sc 6. Join with a sl st to the first sc. 
2. Petal Layer #1: *(Ch 1, hdc 3, ch 1, sl st) in same st to create a petal. Sl st in next st* repeat around in each of the 6 sc. This yields 6 petals. 
3. Foundation #2: *Ch 3 and turn the flower over to its backside. Sl st in the furthest loop in petal from your hook* around, creating 6 ch-3 foundation gaps. 
4. Petal Layer #2: *Sl st, ch 1, hdc 4, ch 1, sl st* in each of the ch-3 gaps. 
5. Foundation #3: *Ch 4 and turn the flower over to its backside. Sl st in the furthest loop in petal from your hook* around, creating 6 ch-4 foundation gaps. 
6. Petal Layer #3: *Sl st, ch 1, hdc 5, ch 1, sl st* in each of the ch-4 gaps. 
7. FO with a long tail for sewing later.

ORIGINAL LEAF

Use a 4mm hook with light weight (3) yarn.

1. Begin with a long yarn tail for sewing later.  Ch 8. 
2. You will work down one side of the ch first.  Sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Sc, hdc, dc, tr 2, dc+dc+hdc in last ch. 
3. Continue on the other side of the ch. Hdc+dc+dc in first ch. Tr 2, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. 
4. FO and weave in the end.

THINNER LEAF VARIATION

Use a 4mm hook with light weight (3) yarn.

1. Begin with a long yarn tail for sewing later.  Ch 8. 
2. You will work down one side of the ch first.  Sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Sl st, sc 2, hdc 2, dc+dc+hdc in last ch. 
3. Continue on the other side of the ch. Hdc+dc+dc in first ch. Hdc 2, sc 2, sl st 2. 
4. FO and weave in the end.

1. Arrange the leaves and flowers over the headband. 
2. When satisfied with the positioning, sew the leaves down. (I use a small crochet hook to pull the ends through the headband and tightly tie them together.) 
3. Sew the flowers onto the headband. 
4. Weave in all ends.
