Layered Rose Applique · Free Crochet Pattern

Hello my fellow crocheters,

I've been on a flower kick lately, and have been experimenting with different variations of stitches.  I finally came up with a layered rose design that I'm really happy with, so I thought I'd share it with you!  It's a part of a very special project that I'm working on...with more information to come shortly!

This Rose Design is...

  • Three-dimensional (3D!)
  • Layered with three five-petal layers
  • Quick to work up
  • Beginner-friendly
  • One piece (no sewing)
  • Versatile and can be made with different types of yarn weights, fibers, colors, and crochet hook sizes
  • A great applique for different projects, such as hats, headbands, bags, greeting cards, and more!
  • Oh, and I mustn't forget to mention...it comes with a full video tutorial!

I personally find this design very fun to make!  Once I get my hands on some different shades of pink cotton yarn, I'll be making a bunch more!  There's so much to do with this pattern as well, since it can serve as a component if you don't want to make it as a standalone project.  Here are some ideas below...

Ideas & Inspiration

  • Hairband
  • Hair clip
  • Headband
  • Keychain
  • Bookmark
  • Applique for a greeting card
  • Applique for a crochet hat
  • Applique for a bag
  • Applique for a blanket
  • ...and more!

This pattern includes instructions for both the three-dimensional (3D) layered rose and the leaf, which are quick and easy to work up. The rose and leaf are both no-sew projects so you are crocheting them completely in one piece. You can easily customize the size by using different yarn weights and hook sizes. It makes the perfect applique for hats, headbands, amigurumi dolls, and more!

Varies, depending on yarn weight and hook size.

Level of Difficulty:

★★☆☆☆  Easy / Familiar Beginner
Requires familiarity with the stitches used (below).

Stitches/Terms Used:

  • FO: fasten off
  • Sk: skip
  • Ch: chain
  • Sl st: slip stitch
  • Sc: single crochet
  • Hdc: half double crochet
  • Dc: double crochet
  • Tr: triple (treble) crochet

  • Light (3) weight yarn (I used Patons Grace yarn in white and blush)
  • 3.75mm hook for medium flower (2.75mm for small, 5mm for large)
  • 4mm hook for leaf
  • Scissors

Note: Use different crochet hook sizes to yield different flower sizes. Smaller hooks = smaller flowers. (I used a 2.75mm, 3.75mm, and 5mm hook.)

  1. Foundation #1: In MR, sc 5. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
  2. Petal Layer #1: *(Ch 1, dc 3, ch 1, sl st) in same st to create a petal. Sl st in next st* repeat around in each of the 5 sc. This yields 5 petals.
  3. Foundation #2: *Ch 3 and turn the flower over to its backside. Sl st in the furthest loop in petal from your hook* around, creating 5 ch-3 foundation gaps.
  4. Petal Layer #2: *Sl st, ch 1, dc 4, ch 1, sl st* in each of the ch-3 gaps.
  5. Foundation #3: *Ch 4 and turn the flower over to its backside. Sl st in the furthest loop in petal from your hook* around, creating 5 ch-4 foundation gaps.
  6. Petal Layer #3: *Sl st, ch 1, dc 5, ch 1, sl st* in each of the ch-4 gaps.
  7. FO with a long tail for sewing later.

Note: Use different crochet hook sizes to yield different leaf sizes. Smaller hooks = smaller leaves. (I used a 4mm hook for my leaves.)

  1. Begin with a long yarn tail for sewing later.  Ch 8.
  2. You will work down one side of the ch first.  Sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Sc, hdc, dc, tr 2, dc+dc+hdc in last ch.
  3. Continue on the other side of the ch. Hdc+dc+dc in first ch. Tr 2, dc, hdc, sc, sl st.
  4. FO and weave in the end.
