Easy Lace Bonnet (Free Crochet Pattern)

Dear fellow crocheters,

I'd love to share with you my newest design, the Easy Lace Bonnet!  Here is my sweet Lena Rose, enjoying the cozy hat.

This bonnet features beginner-friendly stitches that make a lovely stitch pattern when put together.  It also has a scalloped lace edge and an area to insert a ribbon through.  What I love about the design is that it's crocheted in one piece, requiring no sewing at all!

I used Caron Simply Soft yarn in the color "off white", which gave the bonnet a really simple yet classic look.  I think a solid color really shows off the textured stitches beautifully, though it'd be fun to see the bonnet in multi-colored yarn too!  I'd also like to mention that, after throwing the bonnet in the wash, it came out feeling even softer!

If you're thinking of making a sweet gift for a little baby in your life, I hope you'll give this project a go!  It's easy to put on and wear.  It's practical, comfortable, and keeps heads warm.  Perfect for baby showers, birthdays, holidays, craft fairs, and not to mention -- your own little one!

The size I made is for my baby, though it can easily be adjusted to fit different head sizes!  Check out my Hat Sizing & Measurements Reference Chart post to download the free printable chart.

Introduction:
The Easy Lace Bonnet is a sweet vintage style hat that will make your little girl look absolutely precious!  It features a textured look using simple stitches, and a lacy trim to the edge that gives off a fairytale vibe.  The entire bonnet is crocheted in one piece, thus requiring no sewing at all.  It is the perfect accessory and fits newborn babies from 0-6 months, 6-12 months, and is easily adjustable to accommodate additional sizes.  Tips to crochet larger sizes are included in the pattern along with a hat sizing reference chart.

Easy to put on and wear, it is practical, comfortable, and keeps heads warm.  The traditional look of this bonnet doesn’t go out of fashion and will always trend with the more modern and contemporary pieces.  It will make the perfect gift for baby showers, birthdays, holidays, craft fairs, and the like!

The PDF pattern file includes written crochet instructions and the Hat Sizing Reference Chart.

Note (Read before beginning):
  1. The bonnet is worked from back of the head (in joined rounds) to body of the hat (in rows).
  2. The starting chains do not count as a stitch.
  3. Sizing tips for adjusting the length and width are indicated in the size 0-6 month section.
  4. For a custom hat sizing/measurements reference chart, download the free printable Hat Sizing Reference Chart.

0-6 months

Use medium weight yarn and a 6mm hook.

Note: We will begin by working in joined rounds.

R1: In a MR: ch 3, insert 12 dc. *Join with a sl st to the first dc. (12 dc)
R2: Ch 3, dc-inc around. *Join. (24 dc)
R3: Ch 3, (dc, dc-inc) x 12. *Join. (36 dc)
R4: Ch 3, (dc 2, dc-inc) x 12. *Join. (48 dc)

Note: At this point, the circle should measure about 5 inches across.  We will now work in rows from here on out.

Sizing tip: to increase the height, continue working the pattern of increases after R4 until you reach a large enough circle.

R5: Ch 3, dc 40. Leave the last 8 sts unworked. (40 dc)
R6-R11: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in same st, sk next st. (Sc+dc in next st, sk next st) all the way across. Hdc in last st.

Sizing tip: to increase the length, continue adding more repeats of R11.

R12: Ch 4, turn. Tr in each st across. (40 tr)
R13: (Sk a st, 6-dc-shell in next st, sk a st, sc in next st) across.  Sk a st, 6-dc-shell in next st.

Sc across the bottom edge of the bonnet for a neat look.

Fasten off.  Weave a long ribbon through R12 of the bonnet.
