Baby Pumpkin Head (Free Crochet Pattern + Video Tutorial)

Dear fellow amigurumi enthusiasts,

I'm super excited to share with you my latest creation, the Baby Pumpkin Head doll!  If you're into "spooky-cute" sort of things, then this ami is for you!

Since October is just around the corner at the time of this post, I itched to come up with a Halloween-inspired doll.  I fiddled around with making a pumpkin, gave it some eyeballs, and decided it needed a body!  I think this little guy came to life with his miniature set of limbs, and I'm pretty happy with how he came out...despite the fact that he was SUPER simple to make!  Since this baby pumpkin head is so itty-bitty, you really only need a small amount of yarn to whip him up!

Quick and easy projects have been my go-to as of late, being a new mama and all... and it doesn't hurt that these quick makes tend to be adorably pocket-sized!

Here's a short video of my Baby Pumpkin Head, if you'd like to check him out!

Of course, you can also make just the head and it'll look super cute too.  (Though, I'd have to say... adding plastic safety eyes makes anything look super cute in my opinion!)

Here's my pumpkin head next to my crochet hook, so that you can get an idea of just how tiny he is!!

For those of you who prefer to follow along with a video tutorial, I'm happy to say that I have one made for the head and stem!  Scroll down this page to check it out after the written pattern portion.

Introduction:
The Baby Pumpkin Head is a “spooky cute” doll that is perfect for Halloween!  Instead of surprising your special trick-or-treaters with candy this year, give them this adorable character that they will surely cherish and love all year long.  The Baby Pumpkin Head is the perfect, pocket-sized buddy to crochet as a gift this October season, or as a miniature amigurumi to sell for Fall craft fairs.  Kids and adults alike will enjoy this whimsical, chibi doll.

Use orange yarn and 3.75mm hook.

R2: Ch 2, turn. Hdc across in BLO. (12 hdc)
R3-R12: Repeat R2.
FO with a long tail. Attach 7mm plastic safety eyes in the middle of the rectangle between R4-R5 and R6-R7.

Stem
Use brown yarn and 3.75mm hook.
Ch 3.
R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next st.
FO with a long tail.

Arms & Legs (x4)
Note: Arms and legs are made using the “i-cord” crochet technique. Click here for the i-cord tutorial, or scroll down to see videos for this pattern below.
Use black yarn.
Set up the i-cord: Ch 3. Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, YO, pull up a loop, insert hook into next ch, YO, and pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook)
R1: Drop 2 loops from hook, but hold onto them tightly with your non-hook hand so that they do not come undone. YO, pull through loop on hook. Insert hook into first dropped loop, YO, pull through. (2 loops on hook.) Insert hook into second dropped loop, YO, and pull through. (3 loops on hook)
R2-R4: Repeat R1.
To finish, YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook.  FO with a long tail for sewing later.

Body
Use black yarn.
R1: In MR, sc 6. (6 sts)
R2: Inc around. (12 sts)
R3: (Sc, inc) x 6. (18 sts)
R4-R5: Sc around. (18 sts)
R6: (Sc 4, dec) x 3. (15 sts)
R7: Sc around. (15 sts)
R8: (Sc 3, dec) x 3. (12 sts)
R9: Sc around. (12 sts)
FO with a long tail for sewing later.

  1. Take the rectangle that you made from the 'Head' instructions.  String the long yarn end with a yarn needle.  Use a running stitch across the top edge of the rectangle pumpkin body.
  2. Cinch the top closed by pulling tightly on the yarn tail. Continue sewing the sides of the pumpkin together, stitch by stitch.
  3. Stuff the pumpkin, but be careful not to stretch the stitches so much that gaps will appear.
  4. After stuffing, sew the bottom closed. Pull tightly to cinch the bottom closed.
  5. To make a pumpkin shape, insert the yarn needle from bottom through top of pumpkin, pulling tightly to create the center indent.
  6. Sew the stem to the top of the pumpkin.
  7. Get the arms and legs, and sew them to the body.
  8. Stuff the body, then sew it to the head.

  9. Congratulations on finishing your Baby Pumpkin Head!
