If you're looking for a very beginner-friendly crochet granny square pattern that features repetitive and easy stitches, you've come to the right page! Here's the newly-designed Merry-Go-Round square, and I'm excited to share the written pattern and video tutorial for free with you!

LINKS

This granny square is beginner-friendly and crocheted using only two stitches: single crochet (sc) and chain (ch)!  It is an easy, repetitive pattern that you can mindlessly crochet without having to refer to written instructions after a few rounds.

Yarn

As a rule of thumb, thinner yarns and smaller hooks will produce smaller squares, while thicker yarns and larger hooks will produce larger squares.

This pattern produces a dense stitch without gaps between your stitches if you're using a small hook with your yarn. For instance, mine is made using medium weight 4 Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn and a 2.75mm crochet hook.

It also looks great worked in plush yarn, such as this super bulky weight 6 Hobbii Toucan yarn with a 5mm crochet hook. My example below is the Plush Granny Square Chicken, made with two Merry-Go-Round squares!

You can also use a larger hook with thin yarn to create looser stitches if desired, which will result in a soft and airy fabric.

Colors

This square looks lovely in a solid color, as well as with multi-colored yarns like: variegated, self-striping, and ombre. You can also switch yarn colors every round (or every few rounds) to have controlled color changes.

Uses

Since this square can be made into any size, it's great for any porject that requires a granny square. Some ideas include:
  • Bag, purse, or tote
  • Cup coaster or mug rug
  • Baby blanket or regular blanket
  • Cardigan
  • Vest
  • Sweater
  • Pillow cover
  • Amigurumi made with squares
