Creative Ways to Use Leftover Yarn

If you’re a crafter, chances are you’ve accumulated quite a stash of leftover yarn from all of your projects. While these colorful pieces may seem useless, you can actually make some pretty cool creative projects with them.

Don’t let your leftover yarn go to waste! Turn it into something delightful and functional.

DIY Plant Hangers

Give your indoor plants a stylish upgrade with homemade yarn plant hangers. You can create a simple macramé plant hanger by combining strands of yarn in different patterns. These plant hangers are a wonderful way to add a boho-chic element to your home.

Yarn-Wrapped Picture Frames

Convert old picture frames into colorful decor by wrapping them with yarn. Simply apply a small amount of glue to the frame and wrap the yarn tightly around it, covering the entire surface. You thus give frames that may be scratched or dull a new lease on life, adding texture and a personal touch to walls and shelves.

Yarn Tassel Garlands

Brighten up your home with colorful yarn tassel garlands. Cut several strands of yarn to the length you wish, fold them in half, tie them at the top, and trim the ends to make them even. Then string them onto a long piece of yarn or twine.

Hang the garland on walls, across doorways, or around mirrors for a playful touch of decor. The garlands can be adapted for different occasions or themes.

Beverage Koozie

Enjoy a handmade touch when you're sipping your favorite drinks. It’s as easy as crocheting a rectangle and then linking up the short sides of it. You can quickly make cozy beverage koozies for all of your favorite drinks, whether a hot cup of tea you sip after getting up in the morning or an infused beverage that you enjoy before falling asleep.

Miniature Pom-Poms for Gift Wrapping

Make miniature pom-poms from leftover yarn. All you need is a fork, some yarn, and scissors. Wrap the yarn around the prongs of the fork, tie it in the middle, and cut the loops on both sides to create a pom-pom. Attach these little yarn puffs to gift tags or ribbons to add a playful handmade touch.

Handmade Bookmarks

For book lovers, leftover yarn can be transformed into unique, handmade bookmarks. Braid three strands of yarn together and knot the ends, or crochet a simple chain with a tassel on one end. These bookmarks also make great gifts!

Yarn Embellishments for Clothing

Leftover yarn can be used to add personalized embellishments to your clothing. Create small crocheted flowers, stars, or other shapes and sew them onto hats, scarves, gloves, or even denim jackets. These unique accents will make your clothing stand out and give new life to pieces that may have felt too plain.

DIY Yarn Wall Art

To make yarn wall art, use a piece of cardboard or a wooden frame as your base and wrap different colors and textures of yarn around it in various patterns. You can create geometric shapes, abstract designs, and even a landscape.

Other Tips for Reducing Yarn Waste

Aside from these projects, consider donating your leftover yarn to schools, community centers, or charities where it can be used for crafting projects or to teach others how to knit or crochet. You can also join a local yarn swap group to trade your remnants with other crafters.
