The 5 Essentials You Need in Your Skin Care Routine

When it comes to skincare, feeling good is just as important (if not more so) as looking good.

A mindful skincare routine can ultimately affect your overall self-confidence and well-being in a big way, so it’s a good idea to make sure you’re incorporating the elements that matter most. If you’re not certain, here are five non-negotiables for your weekly skincare routine.

Cleanser

First things first, keep your skin clean and feeling fresh. Even if you don’t use any other products on your face, washing is essential!

When it comes to washing your face, double-cleansing is the method recommended by most skin care professionals. This involves using an oil-based cleanser first to clean off your makeup, oil, and dirt that has built up on your face throughout the day. After that, a milk-based cleanser will act as a deeper cleanser to really get into the bacteria in your pores and put some nourishment back into your skin.

Moisturizer

Staying hydrated is also essential to having clear, healthy, and happy skin. Using a good-quality moisturizer will help your skin stay hydrated and nourished and form a moisture barrier that protects it from the elements.

It’s important that you pick a moisturizer that suits your skin type – lightweight for oilier skin, richer for dry skin, and a non-clogging option if you have sensitive, acne-prone skin. No matter what type of skin you have, ingredients like niacinamide, glycerine, and ceramides are great for hydration, so look out for these in the products you buy.

Sunscreen

Even on overcast days, protecting your skin from sun exposure is incredibly important. UV radiation can lead to sunburns, sunspots, early ageing, and skin cancer, so it's clear why it needs to be avoided!

No matter the weather, make sure to wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every single day – though, SPF 50 is the recommended option, especially as you get older. Apply it liberally and ensure that you reapply every two hours or so if you’re spending time outdoors.

Exfoliator

If you struggle with clogged pores and blackheads, you probably need to incorporate an exfoliator into your skincare routine. Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, clear out your pores, and increase cell turnover – creating a plumper and more radiant complexion.

Depending on how sensitive your skin is, you can use a chemical or physical exfoliator once or twice a week. Skincare specialists recommend AHAs and BHAs for a delicate yet effective treatment.

Treatments and Serums

If your skin is healthy, clear, and hydrated – you can stop right there! However, if you have any specific issues with your skin that you’d like to address, you can use some additional treatments or serums to help manage them.

Make sure you purchase products that will tackle your objectives instead of just copying what influencers are doing online. Everyone’s skin is unique and has specific needs, so consider which problems you’re struggling with and research the appropriate ingredients to clear them up. Once you know what ingredients you’re looking for, you can find them in serums or face masks to use a few times a week.
