Hawaiian Hula Dancer (Free Amigurumi Crochet Doll Pattern)

Hello my fellow crocheters,

I'm so happy to bring you my newest amigurumi design.  Meet Leilani, a Hawaiian Hula Dancing doll!  This sweet girlie is a variation of my Baby Bean (free amigurumi pattern):

The instructions for the Hawaiian Hula Dancer include:

• Body base color changes, using the free Baby Bean Doll Base pattern
• Hula skirt
• Flower crown
• Hair tutorial (available in PDF pattern file and Youtube video)

Leilani is the fourth member of the Baby Bean Doll Base family.  You can view all the Baby Beans here!

Leilani is a charming Pacific Island dancer who wears a red top, a removable green hula skirt, and a removable crown of beautiful, red flowers in her long, black hair.  This is a relatively quick and easy crochet project, and makes the perfect gift for kids who would love playing with toy dolls that have accessories!

Introduction:
The Hawaiian Hula Dancer features this sweet Pacific Islander girl named Leilani.  She wears a red top, a removable green hula skirt, and a removable crown of beautiful, red flowers in her long, black hair.  This is a relatively quick and easy crochet project, and makes the perfect gift for kids who would love playing with toy dolls that have accessories!

This doll pattern is a variation of Sweet Softies’ Baby Bean Doll.  To make the Hawaiian Hula Girl, you will also need pattern instructions for the Baby Bean doll base, available as a free pattern.  This doll’s PDF pattern file includes written crochet instructions for adapting the Baby Bean doll base to create this design.  It includes step-by-step photo references and a detailed hair tutorial.

Level: 

• ★★☆☆☆ Easy / Familiar Beginner 
• Requires familiarity with stitches used (below), attaching plastic safety eyes, changing yarn colors, attaching yarn, and sewing parts together.

Size: 

• Height: 4 ½ in (11.5 cm)

Stitches/Terms Used (US Terminology):

• MR: magic ring 
• FO: fasten off
• Ch: chain 
• Sl st: slip stitch 
• Sc: single crochet 
• Inc: increase (2 sc in same st) 
• Dec: decrease

Materials:

• Medium weight 4 yarn in desired colors (e.g., brown, black, red, green)
• 2.75mm crochet hook
• Pair of 7mm plastic safety eyes
• Fiberfill stuffing
• Yarn needle
• Scissors
• Blush powder & q-tip

~ CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS ~

DOLL BASE COLOR CHANGING GUIDE

Make the following color changes while using the free pattern instructions for the Baby Bean doll base.

HAIR CAP

Use black yarn.

R1: 6 sc in magic ring. (6 sts)

R2: Inc around. (12 sts)

R3: (Sc, inc) x 6. (18 sts)

R4: (Sc 2, inc) x 6. (24 sts)

R5: (Sc 3, inc) x 6. (30 sts)

R6-R11: Sc around. (30 sts)

FO with a long tail for sewing later.  

Follow my Hair Tutorial (with free video tutorial) to attach hair to your amigurumi doll's hair cap.

FLOWER CROWN

Part A: HEADBAND RIBBON

Use leaf-colored yarn (green).

With a long tail to start, ch 30.

FO with a long tail.

Part B: FLOWERS (x5)

Use flower-colored yarn (red).

In MR: (ch 5, sl st in ring) x 5.

FO with a tail for tying to the headband.  

Follow the visual references below to finish the flower crown.

HULA SKIRT

Use green yarn.

Starting with a long yarn tail, ch 22.

R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook. (Sc, inc) across.

R2: Ch 1, turn. Sc across.

FO with a long tail, which you will weave up to the starting ch.

Follow the visual references below to finish the hula skirt.

~ FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS ~

1. If you haven't already, follow my Hair Tutorial (with free video tutorial) to attach hair to your amigurumi doll's hair cap. 
2. Position the hair cap to your doll's head and sew it down.
3. If desired, add blush to cheeks using my tips and video tutorial.
4. Help your doll wear her Hula Skirt by tying the two long yarn ends of the skirt behind her back.
