Classic Lace Bonnet (Free Crochet Pattern)

Dear fellow crocheters,

I'm thrilled to share my newest crochet design with you: the Classic Lace Bonnet!

    Links

The Classic Lace Bonnet is a sweet vintage style hat that will make your little girl look absolutely precious.  Easy to put on and wear, it is practical, comfortable, and keeps heads warm!  It is the perfect accessory and fits newborn babies from 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, to smaller toddlers at 2 years old.

This particular design features a beautiful, textured look using simple stitches.  It's a lot of fun to crochet and works up quite quickly, yet yields a fancy-looking result!

I also added a lacy trim, which makes the edges have a vintage style to it.  Kind of gives it a fairytale look, don't you think?  The traditional feel of this bonnet doesn’t go out of fashion and will always trend with the more modern and contemporary pieces.  It will make the perfect gift for baby showers, birthdays, holidays, craft fairs, and the like!

I must also mention how much I loved working with the soft Red Heart Amore yarns!  I used the colors 'Chamomile' (white), and 'Peaceful' (pink).  I just loved the muted feel of these pastel colors.  It gives the finished bonnet a really gentle look!

Anyhow, this is a relatively quick and easy pattern to work up, and it's done completely in one piece (no sewing)!  You’ll have fun crocheting this special handmade gift for your little one, or as a sentimental and heartfelt newborn baby shower gift for an expecting mom.  It will surely be treasured for years to come~

    Crochet Instructions

    Important Notes (Read before beginning!)

    • Visual references are available in the PDF pattern.
    • The bonnet is worked from the back of the head (in joined rounds) to the body of the hat (in rows). The frilly, lace section is then added, and finally the straps.
    • The starting chains ("Ch 2"or "Ch 1") do not count as a stitch.
    • “Dc-inc” means to insert two dc in the same stitch.

    Let's start!

    Bonnet Section

    Start with pink yarn.

Note: We will begin by working in joined rounds.

R1: Ch 2. Insert 12 dc in a magic ring. *Join with a sl st to the first dc. (12 dc)

    R2: Ch 2, dc-inc around. *Join. (24 dc)

    R3: Ch 2, (dc, dc-inc) x 12. *Join. (36 dc)

    R4: Ch 2, (dc 2, dc-inc) x 12. *Join. (48 dc)

    R5: Ch 2, (dc 3, dc-inc) x 12. *Join. (60 dc)

Note: We will now work in rows from here on out.

R6: Ch 1, hdc 58. This leaves the last 2 sts unworked. (58 hdc)

R7-R17: Ch 1, turn. Hdc in same st, sk next st. (Sc+dc in next st, sk next st) all the way across. Hdc in last st.

R18: Ch 1, turn. In FLO, sc across. (We will work in the back loops later.)

Fasten off.  Continue with the Lacy Frill portion.

    Lacy Frill Section

Use white yarn for this portion. Go back to the side where we began R18.  Attach white yarn to the back loop of the first st.

R19: Ch 3.  In BLO: dc 2 in same st. Continue working in BLO, inserting 3 dc in each st.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

    Straps Section

Use pink yarn for this portion. Place the bonnet face-down, upside-down. (Photo references are available in the PDF pattern.)
    1. Ch 50 (or however long you want your straps to be!)
    2. Without fastening off, insert your hook into the right-most stitch of the hat's bottom edge. Sc across the bottom edge. After reaching the end, ch 50 (or however long your first strap was).
    3. Fasten off.
