Creator Challenge: Part 3 of 5

Dear fellow crocheters,

Welcome to Sweet Softies' second Creator Challenge, featuring Coral the Mermaid!  She's the perfect amigurumi doll to make this summer!  If you haven't already, check out the INTRO PAGE for rules and important information about this Creator Challenge.

PART 3

Lower Body and Tail Fin

Pattern Notes:

  • In order to work on Part 3, you must have completed Part 2, which goes up to R23.

Let's Begin!

Continue with the Lower Body (Tail)

Switch to the main tail color.

R24
: In BLO: (Sc 6, inc) x 3. (24 sts)

R25: (Sc 7, inc) x 3. (27 sts)
R26-R27: Sc around. (27 sts)

Insert a folded pipe cleaner up the neck into head to keep the neck sturdy. Continue stuffing the body as you crochet.

R28: (Sc 7, dec) x 3. (24 sts)
R29: (Sc 6, dec) x 3. (21 sts)
R30: (Sc 5, dec) x 3. (18 sts)
R31: (Sc 4, dec) x 3. (15 sts)
R32: (Sc 3, dec) x 3. (12 sts)
R33: (Sc 4, dec) x 2. (10 sts)
R34: (Sc 3, dec) x 2. (8 sts)
R35: Sc around. (8 sts)

Make sure your mermaid’s body is stuffed firmly, but be careful not to overstuff and stretch the stitches.  Switch to the tail fin color.

Continue with the Tail Fin

R36: Squeeze R35 flat and close it with 4 sc across.
R37: Ch 1, turn. Inc, sc 2, inc. (6 sts)

R38: Ch 1, turn. Inc, sc, sl st 2, sc, inc. (8 sts)

R39: Ch 2, turn, dc, hdc, sl st in previous row 2 times, hdc, dc, ch 2, sl st.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Start on the Hip Fin

Start with the hip fin color (can match the tail fin).

1. Attach yarn to the center backside of the doll, at the back loops that were created during R24 of the body.

2. Ch 2, dc in same st. Dc around. When you near the midline, do the following: hdc, sl st 2 (this part should be right in the center of the mermaid), hdc. Then, continue dc around.

3. Join with a sl st to the first dc to complete the round.  Fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Congratulations on finishing Part 3!
You will continue with the hair cap and (optional) hair bun in Part 4.
