What to Do Immediately After a Car Accident: A Step-by-Step Guide

Car accidents can happen to anyone so it is very useful to know what we need to do to get the best outcome. The more of these things you remember to do, the more satisfied you will be once everything settles.

Have a lawyer

Before you are even involved in a car accident, you should have already picked out a lawyer for yourself. When you want to hire a car accident attorney, there are many things that you need to consider. The first is that they need to have the necessary experience and expertise. Next, they should be dealing with everything related to car accidents. This is important because they will be the best people to advise you properly once the accident has happened and you make sure everyone is safe. Also, it would be great if the lawyer is someone from your locality so that they can immediately start preparing for everything you need, and because when you hire a local, they are familiar with the way the justice system works in your city and how certain judges and lawyers operate.

Make sure everyone is safe

As soon as you have realized what has happened, you will have to make sure that everyone around you is okay and that they do not need any assistance. Next, you will have to check yourself because many times, due to adrenaline, people who were in a car accident do not realize that they have been injured. You should go over your body once with your hands and see whether there is some blood somewhere. If there is a wound, then you should immediately press it down, go for the aid kit, and then call an ambulance. If everything is well with you and you feel well, then you should check up on the other car because it may not be the same. If they are also good, then you should wait for the authorities to come and just make sure that you do not make any sudden movements just to be sure. Of course, if someone is in danger and you are capable of doing something, you should immediately go and help them, no matter if the person is at fault for the accident or not.

Call an ambulance

As soon as you have checked if everything is alright, you should call an ambulance and inform them about what happened. When they arrive, they will have a look at all of you and make sure that you are fine. Even if you feel great after the accident, it may still be smart to call them because they could literally save your life, no matter how you feel. Also, they will document every injury that was there, which may be very useful if you ever decide to sue the person for all the damages.

Call the police

In many jurisdictions, it is an obligation to call the police if a car accident happens and that is most likely the best action you can take. They will take care of everything, from documenting all that has happened to helping you out if the other person is violent or unwilling to cooperate. By calling them, you have reduced the risk of something bad happening tremendously and that is truly great. The reports that they write will come in handy once everything has concluded and they may be the strongest evidence you have.

Document everything

Next to the authorities, it would be great if you could also document as much as possible, just so you can make sure that nothing gets missed or neglected. Of course, you should do this if you are feeling healthy. If a non-insured driver crashes your car, this can make things complicated.  Make sure that you photograph as much as possible of the accident scene. Also, if you are not able to take them yourself, you should ask someone whom you trust to do it for you, or at least a bystander.

Do not admit fault

Many people make the mistake of admitting fault while they are at the scene where the accident occurred. You have to understand that whatever you say to the authorities or anyone else could easily wind up in court when it is time to rule in favor of the person who has a stronger case. You should keep your mouth shut if you are afraid that this may happen. Nobody can make you talk; it is against the law. Once you get together with your lawyer, you can talk about what happened, and if you change your mind then and you do not want to pursue the case any longer, you can always do that.

Treat your injuries

Once the dust settles, you will have to get your injuries treated, and you should not hold back on that, especially if you are not going to pay for them. You need to take proper care of your body if you want it to heal properly. You should only be concerned if you cannot afford to go and get full treatment but if you are not at fault, then you should not worry at all. If you do not do that, then most likely you will regret your decision once you feel all the pain that you felt from this accident.

Prepare for litigation

It is very likely that your case will come to court, especially if the other side does not want to settle or admit fault. There are many steps that you need to consider, which your lawyer will carefully walk you through. What is extremely important is that you take care of your mental health. Court proceedings can take months if not years. By going to a therapist or talking with someone, you will protect yourself better.

There are many things that need to be done after a car accident. Of course, the pain, fear, and anxiety you may feel after such an event is overwhelming in itself, but you should be aware of the proper steps to take to make sure everything will resolve as smoothly as possible.
