When to Splurge and Save on Baby Products: Tips for New Parents

As exciting as it can be to expect a new precious arrival, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with all of the different things they require. From clothes and diapers to strollers and cribs – all of the items can add up to be a significant expense for first-time parents.
While you may get caught up in the latest trends, sometimes you don’t need to purchase the very best options on the market. Babies grow so quickly, that it’s better to focus on things that will be practical in the long run.

Not sure where to get started? Then keep on reading! In this article, we are going to discuss when you should splurge and when you should save on popular baby products.

Strollers – Splurge

Strollers are an essential baby product that you will use almost every day. From walking around the park to running errands at the store – you’ll want to find something that is durable and long-lasting.

While there are many affordable options, it’s wise to splurge on a few extra features. For instance, things such as a large storage space and all-terrain wheels will make all the difference when you’re out and about.

Head to a store and test out a few different designs. This way you’ll be able to choose one that feels great and fits into your vehicle.

Wraps and Carriers - Splurge

During those first few months, it's important to make your little one feel protected and secure. Ask any parent, and they will tell you that comfortable baby wraps and a quality carrier and well worth the investment.

Alongside keeping your little one snug, they free up your hands so that you can do other tasks. Just make sure that you follow the correct instructions when using them.

Clothes – Save

One of the biggest temptations you will face as a new parent is buying baby clothes. As we mentioned above, they grow so quickly and may only wear an outfit a few times before they are in the next size.

Rather than splurging on an entire wardrobe, only purchase items that are practical and comfortable. If you do get the urge to shop, head to your local thrift store. Most of the items are brand new and will be half the price!

Diapers – Splurge

While most people assume that any brand of diapers will do, this is something you need to consider carefully. While there are affordable options out there, they are usually not as absorbent and can cause issues with your baby’s skin.

Pricier diapers on the other hand can be more effective at preventing diaper rash and leakage. Thankfully, you can buy in bulk to save cash – just remember to get the correct size.

Car Seat – Splurge

Car seats are non-negotiable when it comes to infant safety. It’s essential that you buy a seat that meets the safety standards set by your country's government.

A reliable seat will cost more upfront, but it’s vital to ensure that your child is safe during car rides. Never buy something that is second-hand as you won’t know if it has ever been involved in a previous crash.

Toys - Save

Toys are another product that you will be tempted to purchase but try not to go overboard, especially during the first few months. Most young babies are interested in simple toys rather than big expensive items.

Of course, you should check that what you buy is age-appropriate, safe, and promotes their cognitive and sensory development. You could even search around for local toy libraries if you want to save even more.

Cribs – Splurge

Cribs are a big purchase that you will need to budget for in advance. While there are lots of affordable options, you will need to check that they meet safety standards and are made from quality materials.

If you want to reduce costs in the long run, invest in a design that can be converted into a toddler bed. This will prevent you from having to purchase a whole new bed around the age of 2-3.

High Chairs – Splurge

While you might not use a high chair for the first few months of your baby’s life, they are still something that is worth splurging on. When they become ready for solid foods, you’ll want something durable and easy to clean.

Opt for a design with adjustable seating positions to support their growth and development. It should also come with a footrest so that they can digest food correctly.

Baby Monitor – Save

A baby monitor is a great product that can help give you peace of mind when you’re bub is resting. While there are a lot of fancy designs on the market, a traditional inexpensive one will do the job.

While they may not have WIFI and certain tracking systems, you’ll still be able to see and hear them through the screen. That being said, if you have increased anxiety and concerns, there is nothing wrong with spending the extra money.

Bottle/Pumping Supplies – Splurge

Finally, whether you plan to breastfeed or formula feed, it’s always an excellent idea to purchase great bottle/pumping supplies. However, you should wait until after your baby has arrived first.

This is because it may take time until you find something that both you and bub like. Many new parents have spent hundreds of dollars on different feeding supplies, only for their baby to like one specific bottle!

Final Words

When it comes to purchasing products for your new arrival, always do your research. Some items are worth the splurge, while others can be saved on without sacrificing quality

Aim to prioritize durability and realistically assess your needs. By spending your money in the right place, you will be able to take care of your little one’s needs for years to come. Not to mention any other siblings that may join along the way!

Congratulations, and good luck!
