Classic Bonnet · Free Crochet Pattern

Hello my fellow crocheters,

I'm excited to share with you my newest free crochet pattern -- the Classic Bonnet! It's a really quick and easy project that I made for my baby girl, as I have a penchant for fairytale aesthetics and simply adore the look of bonnets.

As you can probably tell from my recent posts, I just love making accessories for my baby girl. I wanted to create something simple and functional, yet sweet and endearing.

This can be a matching "Mommy and Me" accessory for those who aren't afraid to wear bonnets! I personally love keeping my head cozy. Bonnets seem to maintain their trendy vibes with newborns and babies... if only they were more in-style for adults, too!

But, I do have to say... I doubt I'd wear it as a well as baby Lena!

The beautiful yarn that I chose to use for this project is Furls Whims Merino Yarn! It comes in both DK and Worsted, and I went with the worsted weight. It is sooo heavenly soft to work with and I loved the feel and glide of the yarn, especially when using it with my Furls Odyssey hook.

It felt like such a luxurious yarn to work with. I actually used the same yarn for an amigurumi project as well (soon to come -- stay tuned for my Furls Ami CAL this July!) and it was great for not only amis but garments and accessories. As you can see below, the yarn has great stitch definition, which I think is the perfect choice for this bonnet's textured look.

I also have to add -- this bonnet makes a beautiful last-gift for so many occasions! Baby showers, birthdays, Christmas, holidays... It’s also suitable as a fast and easy product to stock for craft fairs, or as photo props for newborn or baby photographers.

Introduction:

The Classic Bonnet is a sweet vintage style hat that will make your little girl look absolutely precious! It features a lace texture using simple stitches and tying straps that give off both a minimalist and fairytale vibe. The entire bonnet is crocheted in one piece, thus requiring no sewing at all. It is the perfect accessory and fits all head sizes, including: newborn, 6-12 month baby, toddler, child, and adult. A hat sizing and measurements reference chart is also included for custom sizing purposes. Easy to put on and wear, the Classic Bonnet is practical, comfortable, and warm. The traditional look of this bonnet doesn’t go out of fashion and will always trend with the more modern and contemporary pieces. It will make the perfect gift for baby showers, birthdays, holidays, craft fairs, and the like!

Size:

Newborn, 6-12 month baby, toddler, child, adult

Level of Difficulty:

★★☆☆☆ Easy / Familiar Beginner

Requires familiarity with stitches used (below).

Stitches/Terms Used:

MR: magic ring
Ch: chain
Sk: skip
Sl st: slip stitch
Sc: single crochet
Hdc: half double crochet
Dc: double crochet
Inc: increase

Materials:

Medium weight 4 yarn (I used Furls Whims Merino Yarn in the color 'White')
5.5 mm crochet hook (I used Furls Odyssey hook)
Scissors

Pattern Notes (Read Before Beginning):

The bonnet is worked from back of head (in joined rounds) to body of hat (in rows).
The starting chains do not count as a stitch.
A free printable Hat Sizing/Measurements Chart is available if you'd like to check out average head sizes for different age groups.

Baby Size (6-12 months)

Use medium weight (4) yarn with a 5.5mm crochet hook.

Note: We will begin working in rounds.

R1: In a MR: ch 2, insert 10 hdc. *Join with a sl st to the first hdc. (10 hdc)

R2: Ch 2, hdc-inc around. *Join. (20 hdc)

R3: Ch 2, (hdc, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (30 hdc)

R4: Ch 2, (hdc 2, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (40 hdc)

R5: Ch 2, (hdc 3, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (50 hdc)

R6: Ch 2, (hdc 4, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (60 hdc)

Note: Check gauge at this point. The circle should measure about 5 inches across. If your circle is larger than the target size, use a smaller hook. If smaller, use a larger hook. Get as close to indicated measurements as possible. We will now work in rows (without joining) from here on out.

R7: Ch 2, hdc 52. Leave the last 8 sts unworked. (52 hdc)

R8-R17: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in same st, sk next st. (Sc+dc in next st, sk next st) all the way across. Hdc in last st.

Fasten off. Continue with the ‘Straps’ instruction below.

Straps:

Ch 40, or however long you want your strap to be.
Attach chain to the corner of the bonnet where you started your last row. Sc along the bottom edge.
Ch 40 for the second strap.
Ch 1 more, then turn and sl st across in each of the ch.
Sc along the bottom edge of the hood, going back towards the first strap.
Sl st in each of the ch across the first strap.
Fasten off.

Simply fasten off and weave in all your ends, and you are done with this no-sew bonnet!
