Effective Tips for Retail Development and New Stores

Starting a retail business can be exciting. Building a purpose-built retail development that meets the exact needs of your specific business can enable you to hit the ground running and allow you to build your brand and business from the ground up to deliver exactly what you need.

If building your new retail store is on the cards, these tips are factors to consider when planning the development.

Location

The location of your retail unit is paramount. Different locations will serve different retail outlets better. For a convenience store, you need a space with good footfall, not too many competitors, good transport links, and accessible parking. This can allow you to attract foot traffic and vehicular traffic to your store. Suppose you're building a retail store for a furniture shop or fashion outlet. In that case, you can look at different locations, i.e., for a furniture store, you can choose larger out-of-town developments or existing shopping destinations to capitalize on existing traffic. For a clothing store, finding similar businesses in malls or main streets can work well for you to slot into an established retail area and be another store to enhance the shopping experience.

Flow

When designing your retail unit, consider the flow of traffic as a canvas for your creativity. Start from the outside and envision how customers will enter the store via the pavement or parking lot. Design the entrance to seamlessly guide this flow. Then, follow it through the doors of the store, through to the layout of stock, shelving, display units, till points, and anything else you need. Think about the amenities you will add, such as bathrooms. Staff areas need to be considered, as well as any area that needs to have restricted access, so they don't infringe on how others will move around. This is your opportunity to create a space that not only serves your business needs but also delights your customers.

Accessibility

Your store needs to be accessible, and you need to factor in how people will gain access and get around. Self-opening doors, lower handles, wider door frames, and aisles are great considerations to accommodate when designing your store.

Ramps, outside handrails, bars to hold onto, seating, and more can make your store more accessible and accommodating to those who need extra support or shop with you.

Lighting

How you light your store will play a massive part in how you develop its visual appeal. The right lighting can create a welcoming and attractive store environment. Ideally, you want as much natural light as possible, but finding the right internal lighting for your store and what you're selling is vital. Incorporating different lighting styles can enhance your design and functionality.

You want accent, decorative, and ambient task lighting. You also need to choose from daylight lights, fluorescent lights, LED lights, halogen lighting, and natural lighting, to name a few. Do you want a bright white light or a softer light? Working with your retail development company to understand how to light the building and what type of lighting you need in different areas to work with the building you're creating. This attention to lighting can create an ambiance that draws customers in and enhances their shopping experience.
