What Lessons Should You Teach Your Kids Before Age 5?

As parents, we’re always wondering what we should teach our kids. After all, it’s our responsibility to prepare them for life.

Unfortunately, this task is often more challenging than we might think. While some items, like potty training, are essential, others are less clear-cut because of where they come in the developmental process.

Fortunately, this post has some answers. It looks at some of the lessons you’ll want to teach your kids before age 5 and why they’re so essential.

Kindness

While it might sound strange, teaching kids kindness before the age of 5 is essential for preserving their well-being as they get older. Telling them about other people’s feelings can help them empathize more and get along with their peers.

Try demonstrating kindness yourself and then getting your children to follow along. Modelling the behaviour can make it easier for them to understand.

Routines

Another thing you can teach your child is the value of routines. Getting them to organize their day can set them up for work later in their life.

Routines are also valuable for school. Children have to wake up at a specific time, clock in for registration, and then leave at the end of the day. Establishing a routine before school can make this process more bearable.

Emotional Regulation

Another thing you can teach your kids is emotional regulation. Helping them understand their emotions and how to manage them can prepare them for life at the daycare centre or in school.

The best approach is to get kids to describe and identify with the emotions they are experiencing. The more you can do this, the more they will understand their experience and be able to cope with what’s happening.

Social Skills

Teaching things like manners and social skills is also a good idea. Children need to be able to fit into the culture around them.

Teaching them about sharing things is a good place to start. If someone else wants to use a toy, they should let them.

Saying please and thank you is another easy lesson to prepare them for adult life. This teaches them about the value of respecting others.

Even something as simple as making eye contact and greeting people can also help. Being polite and connecting with others is useful in a society addicted to screens.

Problem-Solving

Some parents also aim to teach their children problem-solving skills before the age of 5. For example, they practice choosing between two options with their children, like whether they want to eat the apple or the carrot sticks.

Handling small problems like these early on helps kids deal with bigger issues as they get older. It gives them a sense of agency and allows them to overcome the challenges in their lives.

Literacy

Lastly, some parents teach their under-5s early literacy skills. Children are not expected to write in full sentences at this stage, but sitting them down for a story or encouraging them to speak clearly can help. You can also do things like recognizing numbers and letters together.
