6 Tips for Creating the Perfect Playhouse

If you’re sick of seeing your kids glued to their screens or roaming around the house causing chaos, looking for something to do when the screens are taken away, then you need to build them a perfect playhouse where their imagination will be king or queen! Here are some tips to help you do that.

1. Think Shed

First things first, you need a good base to start with. Enter the humble shed, which of course starts with the right choice of shed bases! Now, I know what you’re thinking—a shed? Really? But hear me out. With a bit of elbow grease and some creativity, a basic garden shed can be transformed into a magical playhouse. Think of it as a blank canvas. Add some bright paint, a couple of windows, and a cute little door, and voila! You’ve got the perfect structure to start with. Plus, sheds are sturdy and can withstand all the wild adventures your kids will undoubtedly have.

2. Do the Decor Right

This is where you can really let your inner child run free. Pick a theme—pirate ship, fairy castle, space station, you name it. Let your kids help decide; after all, it’s their playhouse. Gather some inexpensive decorations, maybe even some DIY crafts, and turn that shed into a whimsical wonderland. Fairy lights, colourful bunting, and a few strategically placed posters can make a world of difference. And don’t forget the all-important sign with a creative name like “No Adults Allowed!” because, obviously, it’s their secret lair.

3. Furnish with Flair

Now, furniture. Keep it simple and child-sized. Small tables and chairs with custom non-slip seat cushions, a comfy bean bag or two, and maybe even a little bookshelf for storytime. If you’re feeling extra crafty, you could even build some of the furniture yourself. Pallets can be turned into benches, and old tyres can become seats. The goal is to make it cosy and inviting without breaking the bank. After all, they’ll probably be more interested in the box the furniture came in than the furniture itself.

4. Take it Outside

One of the best things about having a playhouse is that it encourages outdoor play. So, let’s make sure the outside is just as exciting as the inside. Create a little garden around the playhouse with some easy-to-grow plants or flowers. If you’re up for it, a small vegetable patch can be a fun way for kids to learn about gardening and where their food comes from. And, of course, no playhouse garden is complete without a little path leading up to the door, made from stepping stones or pebbles.

5. Safety First

Safety, of course, is paramount. Make sure everything is secure and there are no sharp edges or dangerous materials. Keep an eye on the weatherproofing too—there’s nothing worse than a soggy playhouse after a bit of British rain. Regularly check for any signs of wear and tear, and make repairs as needed. It’s all fun and games until someone puts a foot through a rotten floorboard.

6. Offer Encouragement

Finally, remember that a playhouse is more than just a physical space; it’s a place where memories are made. Encourage your kids to use it for all sorts of activities—tea parties, secret club meetings, epic battles between good and evil. And join in occasionally. Nothing beats the look on their faces when you enter their world and let your imagination run wild too. After all, playhouses are where magic happens.
