The Perfect Bao · Free Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Have you ever dreamed about making the most perfect bao ever? Well, it might not be yummy like a real one, but it's certainly the cutest I've ever seen! Say hello to my newest FREE no-sew pattern, available as a PDF download and step-by-step video tutorial!

The Perfect Bao is a quick, easy, and no-sew crochet pattern. “Bao”, otherwise known as a Chinese steamed bun or baozi (包子) is a popular food found in Asian cuisine. You can also use this pattern to make a Momo, dumpling, or xiaolongbao (小籠包). It’s the perfect gift for a foodie or Asian culture enthusiast!

About the Pattern

  • Easy / beginner-friendly
  • Works up quickly
  • No-sew
  • Stashbuster project; great for using up leftover yarn scraps
  • Can be turned into a keychain
  • Available as a FREE video tutorial and written PDF pattern

Amigurumi Eyes

I used two different types of amigurumi eyes on this project: the classic black eyes (left) and the cute sparkly eyes (right). Which are your favorite?

Uses

There are many ways to make use of this pattern, such as:
  • Keychain: add a keyring
  • Ornament: add a hanging loop
  • Scent Sachet: stuff it with a satchel of lavender (or your favorite scent) to make it into a soothing diffuser for your car, office, or room
  • Pin cushion: just stick in your pins to have it serve as a pincushion
  • Gift: for family and friends
  • Craft fair product: sell it at markets; it's the perfect market prep pattern to work up because it's quick, easy, and will surely grab attention!

Yarn

I used Hobbii Honey Bunny, which is a 100% polyester yarn. It's fluffy, plush, and makes your amigurumi projects come out super soft and squishy! I think it's a great yarn choice for this bao.

You are welcome to use thinner yarns and other fibers, such as cotton or acrylic, to produce smaller bao. They will make great keychain sizes! My recommended cotton choice is Lion Brand's 24/7 Cotton Yarn.
