Blue Coast Basket (Free Crochet Pattern)

by - March 15, 2019

Dear fellow crocheters,

I'm excited to share with you this super large, ginormous hulk of a crochet basket at 12 inches in height and 15 inches in base diameter!  I named it the Blue Coast Basket, and it's a real simple yet classic design with nautical colors.  It makes a great home décor piece, doesn't it?

It's definitely my biggest crochet piece to date, and this oversized container with two handles is also functional and perfect for storage and organization in a bedroom, closet, nursery, kid's room, playroom, or any living space.  I think it does a pretty nice job of holding stuffed animals!

The Blue Coast Basket can also be a lovely gift for a housewarming party, baby shower, birthday, or any occasion~

To customize it, you can mix and match your favorite colors to create a fun, vibrant look, or a beautiful ombre one like what I did with the two blue shades and white.  You can even add tassels, pom-poms, and other embellishments to give it a nice, personalized touch.

I made this basket using six skeins of Lion Brand's Hometown USA yarn.  Below are the three colors that I used:

The total yardage for six complete skeins is 486 yards, but I had some leftover yarn, so it doesn't need quite that much if you're looking to substitute with a different, super bulky weight 6 yarn!

With the 6.00 mm crochet hook that I used, the basket didn't take all that long to make, and it held up quite well!

Vertical Portion of Basket

The base is complete. Now we will begin working on the vertical portion of the basket, but with *joined rounds. Continue with C1 yarn.

Sl st in the first sc of the previous round.
R22: Ch 1. In BLO, sc around. *Join with a sl st to the first sc. (126 sts)
R23: Ch 1. Sc in first st. (Ch, skip 1 st, sc in next st) around. *Join with a sl st to first sc.
R24: Ch 2. Sc in first ch-1 space. (Ch, sc in next ch-1 space) around. *Join with a sl st in the ch-2 space at the start of this round.
R25: Repeat R23 for all odd rows.
R26: Repeat R24 for all even rows.

R27-R56: Follow the color guide below for changing yarn colors:

Handles

Without fastening off, we will now continue by making the handles with C2 yarn.

R57: Ch 1, sc in first st. Ch 15 (this will be your first handle). Count 15 sts (include the sc AND chains) to skip. Then, continue the pattern with (sc in ch-1 space, ch, skip a st) x 24. Sc in next ch-1 space.
Now you will start making the second handle. Ch 15, skip 15 sts. Continue the pattern with (sc in ch-1 space, ch, skip a st) x 23. Ch, then join with a sl st to the first sc in the round.

Brim

Without fastening off, continue with the brim.

R58: Ch 1. Rsc around. (This means, reverse the direction by inserting a rsc [click here for the video tutorial] in each st. At the ch-15 gaps, simply rsc 15 and continue on.) Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Finally, fasten off and weave in the ends.

That's it, you're done!
