Pocket Pony · Free Crochet Pattern · Creator Challenge 2026

It's the zodiac year of the Horse, starting on Lunar New Year on February 17, 2026! To celebrate, I have designed an adorable little horse pattern that will be starring as the design for my ninth annual Creator Challenge!

Links:

This pocket-sized pony is incredibly low-sew, as you only need to sew the head to the body. The full pattern will be shared for FREE on the Sweet Softies' YouTube channel, published in 4 parts according to the timeline (see below). Paying members on my YouTube channel will have access to the complete tutorial (parts 1-4) in one video!  The written instructions will also be added to my blog later.  (See the 'Pattern Links' section for the release dates.)

About the Pattern

  • Quick to make
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Low sew (the only sewing required is to attach the head to the body)
  • Low yardage
  • Easily customizable with different yarn colors
  • Comes with full step-by-step video tutorials for all parts
  • Also available as a printable PDF pattern with photo references and bonus instructions for another version of the pony! (Don't miss this 2-in-1 pattern pack for a cheap price!)

Bonus Second Version

The free version of the Pocket Pony pattern is for the horse with "Strands" as the mane and tail. There's also a second version available, featuring a horse with "Bumps" for the mane and tail! The Bumps version is exclusively available as a written pattern in the PDF pattern download

What's special about the Bumps version?

The horse with bumps for the mane and tail is even FASTER to crochet! The mane is worked continuously without needing to fasten off in-between, and is more suitable to use with a single skein of yarn.
Anyhow, my little horses are very excited to meet their new siblings! I can't wait either - very excited to see your creativity!

Interested in making one?  Read on for the FREE pattern links, rules, and important information pertaining to this Creator Challenge.

Creator Challenge: Introduction

Creator Challenge is an event made up by Sweet Softies where you can enter to:
  1. Join a free crochet-a-long featuring one of my new pattern designs
  2. Complete the project (see 'Rules' below)
  3. Customize your creation however you'd like!
  4. Submit a finished photo(s) of your creation following the requirements (see 'How to Submit Entries' below)
  5. At the end, a winner will be announced and receive a prize!
In this crochet-a-long (CAL), crocheters are encouraged to add their own unique flair to finish the doll.  This includes but isn't limited to different yarn colors, yarn fibers, embroidery details, and embellishments (e.g., appliques, beads, buttons, bows, flowers, pegasus wings, unicorn horns).  Allow yourself to be creative and most importantly, have fun! All acceptable submissions that follow the rules below will be shown on my website, and possibly a YouTube video if I make one.  One submission will be handpicked by me for a prize!
