Inspiration
This mini rodent was inspired by Leo Lionni’s books, “Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse” and “Frederick”. My daughter recently fell in love with the story, Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. I wanted to make a little "book buddy" for her, because I know how much fun it is to see the characters come into "life" in 3D forms.
Hence, Sir Squeak was designed, and I made two so that one could be Alexander and one could be Willy (after the magic lizard turned him into a real mouse). Having these amigurumi mice has led to a lot of pretend play and re-enactments of scenes from the story, as well as Alexander and Willy having their own made-up adventures! Gotta love a toddler's creativity!
Yarn
This sweet little mouse is crocheted with Hobbii Honey Bunny yarn, which is a chenille velvet yarn that makes wonderfully soft and plush amigurumi. You are also welcome to try out different yarn weights and fibers to create different looks and sizes. For instance, if you'd like a smaller keychain version of this plush mouse, try using worsted medium weight cotton or acrylic yarn (and a smaller hook, such as 2.75mm).

HEAD & BODY
Note: This section starts from the tip of the nose.Use C1 yarn.
R1: Ch 2. Insert 5 sc in the 2nd ch from hook. (5)
R2: Inc around. (10)
R3: (Sc, inc) x 5. (15)
R4: (Sc 2, inc) x 5. (20)
R5: Sc around. (20)
R6: (Sc 9, inc) x 2. (22)
R7: Sc around. (22)
R8: (Sc 10, inc) x 2. (24)
Insert plastic safety eyes between R3-R4. (I recommend 10mm solid black eyes, or 13mm black with white eyes.)
Pause to crochet the ears, so that you can tie the ends securely inside the body.
EARS (x2)
Insert hook under a st in R5, where you would want the ears to go. Attach C2 yarn.
- Ch 2. In the 2nd ch from the hook: hdc + dc + tr 2 + dc + hdc + sl st.
Note: For sturdier non-floppy ears, insert your sts (hdc + dc + tr2 + dc + hdc + sl st) directly into the same body stitch where you attached your yarn, instead of in the chain.- FO with a tail. Pull both starting and ending yarn tails inside the body and tie the ends together securely.
- Repeat steps #1-3 for the second ear.
Continue with the body instructions.
R9-R10: Sc around. (24)
R11: (Sc, dec) x 8. (16)
Stuff the body and continue stuffing as you work along.
R12: Dec around. (8)
FO with a long tail for sewing the opening closed later.
TAIL
Insert hook under a st in R12, where you would want the tail to go. (I chose the center of the back.) Attach C2 yarn.- Ch 11. Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sl st in each ch across.
- FO with a tail. Pull both starting and ending yarn tails inside the body and tie the ends together securely.
FINISHING
Using the long yarn tail from the body, sew the opening of the body closed.Video Tutorial
