The Ultimate Baby Sleep Guide: What Works (and What Doesn’t)

Getting enough sleep is essential for babies' development and wellbeing. However, many parents and foster carers struggle with getting babies to sleep through the night. This guide provides tips on establishing healthy sleep habits and dealing with common sleep problems.

Establishing a Bedtime Routine

Creating a consistent, calming bedtime routine is key to helping babies wind down and drift off to sleep. Try to follow the same sequence of activities leading up to bedtime each night. This could include:
  • Bath time
  • Putting on pyjamas
  • Reading a story
  • Singing lullabies
  • Dimming the lights
  • Giving them a comfort item
The routine signals to your baby that it's time to sleep. Keep bedtime around the same time each night. Foster carers fostering in Southampton should aim to maintain the routine the baby is used to.

Getting the Setting Right

Where and how your baby sleeps also affects their ability to fall and stay asleep. Some tips:
  • Room sharing reduces SIDS risk in the first 6 months. Move the cot into the parents' room.
  • Keep the room cool, quiet and dark. Use blackout curtains.
  • Make sure the mattress fits the cot snugly. Do not use loose bedding.
  • Only put baby to sleep on their back.
  • Avoid screens and stimulation before bed.

Sleep Associations

Babies often connect certain conditions with falling asleep, like being rocked or fed to sleep. These associations become sleep cues. If they are missing when the baby wakes up, he or she may have trouble going back to sleep.

To avoid negative sleep associations:
  • Put your baby to bed while drowsy but still awake.
  • Don't let your baby rely on rocking, feeding, or your presence to fall asleep.
  • Try a noise machine to soothe your baby.
Foster carers should avoid disrupting positive sleep associations the baby relies on.

Common Sleep Challenges

Even with great sleep habits, many babies struggle with sleep regressions, night wakings, and daytime naps. Here are some effective solutions:

Sleep Training

Gradually teaching your baby to self-soothe and fall asleep independently through "cry it out" or gentler methods. Consult your GP first and decide what feels right for you and baby.

Sleep Regressions

Babies suddenly start waking more frequently. They pass with time. Use consistent bedtime routines and avoid making changes.

Night Wakings

Feed babies under 6 months when they wake up. For older babies, try soothing without feeding. Check that the room is dark and cool.

Short Naps

Make the room darker. Try babywearing or pushchair rides to elongate naps. Follow age-appropriate wake windows.

Early Wakings

Push bedtime 15 minutes later incrementally. Use blackout curtains. Wait to attend to baby until the desired wake-up time.

Fussiness

Check for hunger, burping, gas pain, temperature, dirty nappy, or sensory overload. Try calming techniques like swaying, shushing or swaddling.

When to Call the Doctor

Consult your GP if sleep problems persist or your baby has difficulty falling or staying asleep despite good sleep habits. Sudden changes in sleep patterns could indicate an underlying issue.

Stay Consistent

Establishing healthy sleep habits takes time and consistency. Stick to routines, avoid sleep crutches, and respond to wakeups the same way every time. Your hard work will pay off with a baby who sleeps soundly.
