Kids learn everywhere they go. School, home, friends’ houses, the playpark, on vacation - the list goes on and on. Each place is going to have a different kind of learning for your children to get involved in.
School, for example, offers formal education in a traditional setting. On the other side of things, when kids learn while they’re out in the world, they do so through sheer curiosity. And even if you don’t homeschool your kids, they’re going to learn a lot just from being at home with you; it’s where they spend most of their time!
So how can you maximize this learning? How can you make sure kids get the most out of being at home? Here’s a little insight into the kind of education you should always encourage when the kids are in the house.
How to Feed Themselves
Being able to feed ourselves is one of the most important skills to have in life. If you know how to cook, you’re going to consume a very healthy and nutritious diet over the course of your life, and that knowledge can be taught young! So get the kids into the kitchen with you and show them what it means to mix up a batter or sauté vegetables in a frying pan. If they know how to cook, or how to pair flavors together, or even just turn the oven on and off safely, they’re never going to forget how to do these things. Cooking can be just like riding a bike!
Healthcare and Healthy Choices
Healthcare is best learned by doing. When the kids see that their healthy choices have healthy repercussions, and all this happens in real time, they’re going to learn that making healthy choices is better for them in the long run.Eating all their vegetables so they can have a helping of pudding, is a great example of real time healthy choices ending in something cool and desirable. Or not throwing a tantrum when you’re off to a medical appointment, and instead talking thoroughly with the audiologist about hobbies and hearing aid choice, will feel a lot better (and make the appointment end much quicker!), than if they were to react the opposite way.
Attention Span Development
It’s quite common for the kids to get in from school and immediately place themselves in front of the TV or get their tablet out and play something on it. This is where their attention span may be getting eroded. If there’s always something to entertain in front of them, they’re not going to be able to use their imagination, build up their social skills, or develop a lengthy attention span that’ll carry them through to college!
Stamp down on this now and see what you can do about this, even if it means you all spend a bit more time doing manual hobbies without any background noise.
A lot of education should happen at home, but these can be most important!
