Do You Need A Spare Bedroom?

A lot of people choose a home to buy because of the number of bedrooms it has (as well as other factors, such as location, of course), and they’ll often pick a place that has more bedrooms than they actually need to use - there’s something about the idea of having a ‘spare bedroom’ that really appeals. Perhaps it’s something from childhood or a societal idea that having an extra room you hardly ever use is a good thing.

But is it a good thing? Or is it actually a waste of a perfectly good room that could be put to better use? If you have guests over all the time, then a spare bedroom makes sense - it’s a guest room and you’re using it. But if you never have people to stay then that room is just gathering dust, and there are far better things you can use it for - read on to find out what some of them are.

Home Office

You don’t have to have a remote job to make good use of a home office - it can be a great place to chill out and work on a hobby, a place to connect with people online or a place to run a side hustle so you can quit your day job and become more financially independent with more free time.

It’s not what you do with or in your home office that counts; it’s the fact that you have one. By turning a spare room into an office, you’ll always have a quiet place to go where you can do whatever administrative tasks you need to do, from paying bills to working on a business plan for the future. Plus, it can be a fantastic space for the kids to do their homework without distractions, for example.

A Gym

If health and fitness are things you want to include more of in your life but you never seem to have enough time to get to the gym to do what you need to do, why not have the gym come to you instead? Hire home renovation contractors to make some changes to the space if need be - sound-proofing can be useful if you’re investing in a treadmill, for example, and at the very least you’ll want different flooring (carpeting is lovely in a bedroom but it’s not great in a gym where a wooden or laminate floor makes more sense) - and then you can invest in the right equipment for your needs.

If you’ve got a gym at home, it’s going to be much easier and less time-consuming to get fit and lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, and even if you only use the room for 30 minutes a day, that’s 30 minutes of health and wellness you wouldn’t have had before.

Creative Studio

Are you a creative person? Would you like to be? Many of us love the idea of being more creative, but there’s nowhere to do it without making a mess that then takes time to clear up - in the end, it can all seem like more hassle than it’s worth. That’s where turning your spare bedroom into a creative studio can come into play - if there’s a room dedicated to being creative, whether it’s painting, sketching, sculpting, dress-making, or anything else, you don’t have to worry (too much) about the mess and you can just enjoy the process.

The fact is that creativity is good for you - it’s fun, reduces stress, and keeps the brain active. By having a creative hobby you can do at home, you’re helping yourself feel better.
