Creating A Safe And Stylish Home For Your Family

What is your job as a parent? That might be a tricky question to answer because there are so many potential suggestions, but above all, your job is to keep your kids safe and give them a good home to enjoy growing up in. Yes, there are plenty of other things to include as well, and lots more you’ll need to do, but if you’ve got that good foundation, you’re definitely on the right track - everything else can fall into place afterwards.

If that all sounds like a balancing act, that’s because it very often is. However, balancing one thing (or multiple things in most cases) with another is what parenting’s all about, so this is no different - it’s just that it might be on a bigger scale. In other words, even if the idea of creating a safe and stylish home for your family might seem daunting, you can do it - you just need to have some ideas to help you first. With that in mind, here are some ways you can get started so you can achieve the ideal home for you and your kids. Read on to find out more.

Safety First

When it comes to the family home, safety is the first thing you’ll need to think about, and most, if not all, of your decisions about style and decor need to factor in the safety element to make sure it’s going to work how you want it to. You might assume that means you can’t have a stylish home because it all needs to be catered to the children, but that’s far from the truth - it’s possible to have both (it’s all about balance, as we mentioned above).

Firstly, think about how to baby-proof and child-proof your home, as that’s going to make it a lot safer. If you’ve got heavy furniture like bookcases, for example, make sure they’re anchored to the wall to prevent them from toppling over (especially if a curious child were to climb on them, for example). Then take some time to cover all your electrical sockets and outlets with safety plugs, and make sure all the cords and wires are well out of reach to prevent any accidents. Another way to prevent accidents is to install baby gates at the top and bottom of your stairs and by any doors you don’t want the kids to go through with you (like the kitchen, for example). Speaking of the kitchen (and elsewhere), it’s also worth investing in some cabinet locks so your little ones don’t get hold of utensils and cleaning fluids, which can obviously be dangerous.

You’ll also need to think about other elements of your home, like your windows. Ensure that they’re securely latched and can’t open wide enough for a child to fall through or climb through, and while you’re checking that, it might be worthwhile checking for damaged or outdated windows. If you find you’ve got them, speaking to a window replacement company should be your next step to ensure you’re windows aren’t just safe, but energy-efficient too.

Stylish And Functional Furniture

Once you’ve made your home safe, you’ll have a lot more freedom to choose stylish (and functional) furniture to suit your tastes - remember, we said it was a balance, and once safety is dealt with, you can start on the other part of the design plan.

One thing to make sure you look out for is durable materials that can withstand the wear and tear of daily life with kids - the little ones might not mean to make a mess or cause damage, but the fact is it’s highly likely to happen no matter how well behaved the generally are. Children have accidents (and so do adults, come to that). So when you’re picking materials, leather and microfiber can be excellent options for sofas and chairs, for example, because they’re easy to clean and they’re far less likely to stain.

Speaking of cleaning, when you’ve got kids you’ve also got less time to spend on housework, so anything that makes keeping your home clean (which is important for your family’s health) is going to be useful. Apart from picking the right material, as we mentioned above, you can also invest in slip covers that go over the furniture and that you can take off and wash separately, saving a lot of bother and ensuring that your furniture always looks good.

We mentioned that your furniture should be functional, but what about ensuring it’s multifunctional? In other words, could you add items that have a few different uses to your home? If that’s the case, you’ll find you can save space so your place isn’t so cluttered, but you’ll also still have all the things you need to make sure it’s useable and comfortable. A good example is that ottomans you use for storage can double as seating, for example, and a fold-out table could give you a handy extra workspace or surface when you need it, but otherwise it’s neatly hidden away.

Creating Play Zones

If you want a safe and stylish home, creating specific play zones makes a lot of sense - they’ll be very safe areas for your kids to play, and if they’re separate from the house of the house, you can also make sure everywhere else stays organized and clutter-free and you can even choose different furniture if you want to.

You might have a spare room to use, in which case that’s the best option because you can close the door and not worry about it when it’s not being used, but if you don’t have a spare room, what about sectioning off an area of another room, like a dining room or study? A baby playpen or baby gate can help create spaces. Once you find a space to use, you’ll need to think about what to  o be safe, which means doing research and making sure all the materials you pick are non-toxic. Having this dedicated play area can make a big difference to your home, and your kids will love it too as it will feel like theirs.
