5 Useful Hacks That Slash Home Maintenance

Home maintenance is something that every homeowner will have to do at some point in their lives.

But do you really have to spend so much time on it? Well, that’s the big question.

It turns out that there are quite a few hacks that reduce workload significantly. While you can’t eliminate home maintenance entirely, you can cut down on it, and that’s beneficial when you have a family to care for.

So, what do you need to do to reduce your workload? Let’s take a look:

Improve The Ventilation In The Bathroom

One of the first things you can do to reduce home maintenance is to improve the ventilation system in the bathroom. You want it to be able to extract moisture immediately whenever someone takes a bath or shower.

Of course, this is easier said than done. Bathroom fans are notoriously hard to install. However, once you have one fitting, condensation is far less likely to lead to mold buildup.

If your bathroom doesn’t have any space for a vent, you can also use dehumidifiers. Just be warned that these can sometimes increase your power bill if you leave them running all the time.

Use An Appliance Vinegar Wash

Another strategy is to perform an appliance vinegar wash, ensuring you get the cleaning agent into all your machines’ nooks and crannies.

Appliance vinegar wash is cheap and effective. Where possible, use raw acetic acid instead of culinary vinegar as these contain other compounds that might cause your appliances to harbor bacteria. Acetic acid is the cheapest and doesn’t require harvesting of crops to make.

If you want, add vinegar to your dishwasher’s rinse cycle and get it to flush the system for you. This technique can remove limescale from the internal surfaces brushes can’t reach.

Install A Water Filtration System

If you want to prevent limescale buildup at the source, then installing water filtration is the only answer. Homes in hard water areas often see a massive reduction in deposits, reducing the descaling work they need to do.

Ideally, you want to fit a water softener system into your main supply so that it scrubs all water entering the home. Nothing should get through without coming into contact with the filter.

You can also get products that fit on faucets, but these tend to be less effective and require more frequent replacement.

Add Putty To Your Pictures

Another lesser-known technique is to add putty to your picture frames' rear side. Applying tack prevents them from moving from side to side and reduces the damage done to your walls.

Waterproof Your Bathroom

You can also reduce home maintenance by waterproofing your bathroom. Cutting down on standing water can prevent it from getting into other parts of your home and causing damage.

Bathroom waterproofing is usually as easy as laying down rubber mats or floor tiles. These usually have porous and absorbent elements that let them soak up water, allowing you to drain them later (if necessary) into the bathtub.
