The "Any Size" Turban · Free Crochet Pattern & Video Tutorial

Hello my fellow crocheters,

I'm thrilled to share with you my "Any Size" Turban pattern!  As the name suggests, you can make this turban in literally any head size you'd like, following my easy instructions for how to adjust hat's size.  Thus, you can use this same pattern to make a hat for you and your family if you'd like! (Imagine how cute a Mommy and Me turban set would be!)

This is a very versatile pattern that allows you to use any yarn, whether it's light or bulky, velvet or acrylic.  All you need is a suitable hook size for the weight of yarn you're using, because the number of rounds and stitches depend on how large your piece is coming out to be.  We're going by actual measurements here, so you won't need to worry much about the exact round # and count!  It'll be helpful to follow my Hat Sizing & Measurements Reference Chart (free printable).

Aside from the ease of this design, I have to say -- turbans are also super trendy!  This special style of beanie can help keep heads warm and simultaneously make a fashion statement.  To me, I think of it like the top knot headband versions of hats.

This accessory is great for selling at craft fairs as it’s so fast to crochet and would be very popular during the chilly Fall and cold Winter seasons.  It also makes a perfect birthday, baby shower, holiday, and/or Christmas gift!

The yarn that I chose to use for this project is Lion Brand Yarn's Vel-Luxe Yarn in the beautiful shade, 'Marigold.'  This velvety yarn is super soft to the touch, stretchy, and warm!  The resulting texture looks amazing.

In a nutshell, this project is...

  • Quick to work up
  • Beginner-friendly
  • One piece (no sewing)
  • Trendy and fashionable
  • Customizable into any head size ranging from newborn to adult
  • Versatile and can be made with different types of yarn weights, fibers, colors, and crochet hook sizes
  • Great as gifts or craft fair items
  • Available as a video tutorial!

Introduction:

The “Any Size Turban” is a versatile pattern that shows you how to crochet a trendy hat that can fit any head size. It is beginner-friendly, quick, and fun to work up! You can use any yarn (velvet, acrylic, cotton, and more) and a suitable hook size to go with it. Easy instructions and tips show how to customize this beanie to your desired size, whether it’s preemie, newborn, baby, toddler, child, teen, or adult.

This hat is a true fashion statement that is trending with top knot headwraps. It’s practical, comfortable, and will keep heads warm during the chilly Fall and cold Winter esasons! This accessory is great for selling at craft fairs as it’s so fast to crochet, and also makes a perfect birthday, baby shower, holiday, and/or Christmas gift!

Size:

Any size (e.g., preemie, newborn, 6-12 month baby, toddler, child, teen, adult)

Level of Difficulty:

★★☆☆☆  Easy / Familiar Beginner
Requires familiarity with stitches used (below).

Stitches/Terms Used:

  • Ch: chain
  • Sl st: slip stitch
  • Sc: single crochet
  • Hdc: half double crochet
  • Hdc-inc: half double crochet increase (2 hdc in same st)

Materials:

  • Medium weight 4 yarn (I used LB Vel-Luxe Yarn in the color ‘Marigold’)
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors

Pattern Notes (Read Before Beginning):

  • This pattern is broken into three parts. It is constructed in one piece from the crown (top of the head) to the height of the hat
  • Starting chains do not count as a stitch.
  • I used medium weight “4” yarn and a 5.5mm hook, but you are welcome to use any yarn and suitable hook. Follow the measurements and tips for adjusting size.
  • Full video tutorial is available on the Sweet Softies Youtube Channel

Part 1: CROWN OF HAT ("increase rounds")

Important Sizing Note: Continue working the rounds for the crown of the hat until the crown’s diameter is about ¾ inch (2 cm) shorter the desired crown size (refer to the Hat Sizing Chart).  For example, if your desired crown size is 14 cm, stop at 12 cm.

R1: Ch 3. Hdc into 3rd ch from hook. Insert 9 hdc into same st. *Join with a sl st to the first hdc. (10 hdc)
R2: Ch 2, hdc-inc around. *Join. (20 sts)
R3: Ch 2, (hdc, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (30 sts)
R4: Ch 2, (hdc 2, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (40 sts)
R5: Ch 2, (hdc 3, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (50 sts)
R6: Ch 2, (hdc 4, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (60 sts)
R7: Ch 2, (hdc 5, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (70 sts)
R8: Ch 2, (hdc 6, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (80 sts)
R9: Ch 2, (hdc 7, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (90 sts)
R10: Ch 2, (hdc 8, hdc-inc) x 10. *Join. (100 sts)

Remember to stop when the crown’s diameter (length of this flat circle piece) is about ¾ inch (2 cm) shorter than the desired crown size (refer to the Hat Sizing Chart). Without fastening off, continue with the directions for Part 2.

Part 2: HEIGHT OF HAT ("straight rounds")

R1: Ch 2, hdc around. *Join.
R2 and beyond: Continue this pattern by repeating R1 until the hat nearly reaches the desired height (refer to the Hat Sizing Chart).  One last round will be crocheted using the directions below.

Part 3: LAST ROUND ("the turban pinch!")

Note: In this last round, you’ll create the pinch in the fabric that will give your hat the turban style look.

  1. Ch 2, hdc to the halfway point of the hat. For example, if your last round is 100 sts, the halfway point is 50 sts. If your last round is 60 sts, your halfway point is 30 sts. (Tip: fold the hat in half to find the midline if that’s easier.)
  2. Insert a sc into the corresponding stitch between the crown of the hat (increase rounds) and the height of the hat (straight rounds) section.  This will create a “pinch” in the hat.
  3. Insert hdc in each of the remaining sts in the other half of the round.  Join with a sl st to the first hdc.
  4. Fasten off.

Simply weave in all your ends, and you are done with this no-sew turban hat!
