20-Kilometer Rough-Terrain March: Comparing Steel, Leather, and Polyurethane in the Field

Three fighters, one route, and no allowance for weather — that's how this experiment began. The test organizers wanted to show why more and more players are choosing PU armor sets over classic steel and leather. The results were far more convincing than any catalog specs.

The route wasn't chosen for show: a forest trail, an obstacle course with rubble, and an open area under the scorching sun. Each fighter wore a heart rate monitor, and at the start and finish, their time and subjective fatigue were recorded on a ten-point scale.

Start: Three Armors, One Goal

Before the start, each fighter was given fifteen minutes to get used to the weight and adjust the bindings. The fighter in steel was the most confident — the armor looked impressive, and that added to their excitement before the race.

The leather armor was soft and barely restricted the shoulders. But the soldier in the LARPSHOPKEEPER set stood out immediately. The polyurethane was so light that the shoulders didn't sag under the pads' weight, and it was noticeable even before the first step.

The First Five Kilometers: Heart Rate Doesn't Lie

On the flat ground, the difference seemed insignificant, but the first climbs made everything clear. The soldier in steel's heart rate already exceeded 160 beats per minute. The leather showed average values — lighter than steel, but still noticeably pressing on the shoulders after an hour of walking.

But the polyurethane once again lived up to its reputation. The heart rate stayed around 140, the pace didn't slow, and short water stops took less time than the competitors'.

Windfall and Heat: Where Endurance Breaks

In the forest blockage, steel began to hinder. The fighter's shoulder pads caught on branches, wasting precious minutes. His skin was soaked with sweat and noticeably heavier by the mid-distance. But fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane demonstrated the material's main advantage — it was impervious to moisture and heat.

By the end, it became clear why this type of armor is the best choice for long festivals. Here are the main reasons why more and more players are choosing LARPSHOPKEEPER polyurethane suits:
  • significantly lighter suit weight;
  • fiberglass reinforcement without adding weight;
  • moisture and heat resistance;
  • shape retention after exertion;
  • no corrosion or rust;
  • the ability to order a replica.
Every point directly affected the test results — from heart rate to recovery speed after the finish. At a multi-day festival, these benefits are felt every day, not just in the first hour of play.

Finish: Numbers That Sell Better Than Words

At the finish, the fighter in polyurethane showed the fastest time and the lowest average heart rate over the entire distance. He rated fatigue at 4 out of 10, while the fighter in steel scored 8. The numbers speak for themselves: if a player wants to go the distance and not fight their own armor, the choice is clear.

This is exactly the kind of kits LARPSHOPKEEPER produces. Customers receive detailed armor made of fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane resin, created using 3D sculpting, silicone molds, and layered casting.

The test left no doubt. Polyurethane outperforms steel and leather where endurance matters. For those preparing for the next festival, LARPSHOPKEEPER kits offer armor that won't let them down even on the twentieth kilometer.
