Most people think high energy bills come from long showers or someone leaving every light on like it's a runway. Okay, so that’s technically true; those can cause the bills to get a big hike. But truthfully, it’s usually the stuff that doesn’t even cross your mind. Believe it or not, you can install energy-efficient windows, and other things, but those quiet little energy hogs that live in closets hum in the background, and sneak onto your utility bill month after month.
Basically, you can make changes in your home, but if the real culprits are still there, not getting replaced or repaired, well, there’s still going to be some issues. Well, depending on what it is, they may not even be broken. Instead, they’re just old, outdated, and not made for how modern homes run.
Sure, a smart thermostat is fun to show off, but these behind-the-scenes troublemakers deserve a little attention too.
That Clunky Water Heater in the Closet
Oh yeah, this one needs to be the one to start it all out, and yeah, you know the one. It makes odd noises when you shower and takes forever to warm up. If it’s over 10 years old, it could be working overtime and still doing a mediocre job. These older units often burn through energy just keeping a giant tank hot all day long, even when nobody's using it. Seriously, it’s such a massive mistake that time and time again homeowners make.It just can’t be stressed enough that swapping out an old unit for a newer one during a water heater replacement could cut energy waste without changing your habits. Sure, there is some upfront costs (which are usually what most homeowners try and avoid in the first place), but some newer ones only heat water when you need it, which means no more warming water for hours just to wash your face.
There’s the Exhaust Fan that Never Quits
If you live in an old house, then you definitely need to pay attention to this one. Alright, so that old fan above the toilet or stove? Well, it might be pulling double duty 24/7. If it hums on forever every time the light's on, you’re probably spending more than you need to.Now here’s a surprise (that you need to pay attention to): a lot of older fans don’t shut off properly or are just wildly inefficient. Some don’t turn off at all. Thankfully, you don’t need to rip out the ceiling, just get one with a timer or sensor, they’re pretty cheap too.
What About the Fridge? Freezer?
It’s true, they don’t make fridges and freezers like they used to. So it’s understandable why you would want to keep an old one (especially with the whole planned obsolesce thing that home appliances have nowadays). But an older fridge isn’t just bulky, it could be burning energy just to keep your leftovers slightly cold. And if it’s tucked into a tight corner or caked in dust, it’s probably sweating just to keep things cool. It might be time to finally buy a new one (one that’s energy efficient, of course).
