If you’re a skilled language student, then you may well be looking for every opportunity under the sun to have a go at improving your skills in your target language. To be entirely truthful, more power to you! It’s always fun to learn a language, and it’s even more fun to improve your skills and pretend to talk like a native!
Well, to boost your skills on your next vacation, you might consider using an AI trip planner to increase the time you spend using your target language (sometimes referred to as a TL). Route Perfect is a really powerful tool that can help you hop into activities that are sure to immerse you in new vocabulary and boost your skills. What’s not to love?
Quick hops
The main thing that Route Perfect was truly designed to do was to create some amazing road trips for you and your pals to go on. This is all well and good, but it’s not quite a language-learning software, right?Well, we can certainly use the software’s inbuilt capabilities to make it function as a language-learning helper! The best way to do this is to plot a vacation that runs through and across several different language locations.
These locations could be drastically different, such as whole new countries every other day in Europe. These locations could be only slightly different, like different neighbourhoods on different evenings in Guatemala. Either way, this practice of travelling to a whole host of different locations will greatly increase the diversity of the language that you’re interacting with.
If you’ve found yourself at something of a language plateau, then this could be ideal for you! Throwing oneself in at the deep end and learning new vocabulary on the fly is a great way to soak up knowledge and grammar quickly, leading to a boost in your skills.
Intensive, immersive stays
Of course, the alternative to quick hops is to stay somewhere specific for a long time. These immersive travel experiences can be a really great way to interact with native speakers and have no choice but to speak in your target language. This can be all the more intensive and immersive if you find a way to volunteer or work somewhere that’s particularly off the grid. While this is an extreme example, working on a farm in extremely rural Chile removes the option of using Google Translate when things get a bit tricky. Then, your brain has to get actively involved in parsing meaning from the words being spoken to you, and you can pick up turns of phrase and native grammar that no textbook could ever teach you.
Furthermore, these kinds of intense and immersive stays can be wonderful, even if not for language-learning reasons. Many people say that they wish to travel for months on end, but few ever get the chance to do it truly. If you were to submit yourself to something of an off-grid lifestyle, then you open the door to building something of a fascinating story for yourself. You can immerse yourself in a new world and return home when you feel you’ve grown from the experience.
Getting involved with a new activity
While getting stuck into something new might sound a little predictable as far as advice goes, there’s a reason for that: it’s very good advice! The reason that we recommend it in a language-learning situation is that there will always be a situation where you’re not familiar with the vocabulary being used, so it’s better to choose to enter that than be thrust into it.During a lot of academic language learning courses, there will be a module on fairy tales or something similar, in which students learn the appropriate words for “witch”, “goblin”, and “cauldron” in their target language. While this is extremely unlikely to ever come up in a real conversation, it’s the kind of vocabulary that might be useful if you were to live in a country speaking your target language. It would allow you to get more involved with metaphor and fiction in the world around you.
To learn these unusual types of vocab, you may find it particularly useful to engage in a new-to-you activity. You’ll be thrown in at the deep end, but there’s no better way to learn a language than that!
AI can offer us many opportunities if applied in the right way, so consider how you might use it to benefit you on your language-learning journey. With a little time and patience, even the bluntest rock can be shaped into a tool.
