How To Choose The Perfect Rug For Your Home (Top 4 Considerations)

Adding a rug to your home is a brilliant way to breathe new life into a room or add something different to the ambiance. The right rug changes the look and feel of an area - but the key is picking the right rug. All manner of styles present themselves, so how do you pick the perfect rug for your home?

Aesthetically speaking, the way your rug looks is mainly down to personal preference. Nevertheless, you should always consider these four things before choosing your rug, as it helps you figure out the best one to pick for your situation.

Where will you place the rug?

Consider where you will place this rug. It’s the biggest consideration of all, as it immediately rules out certain styles and points you in the right direction. For example, if you’re placing the rug in your living room, you’re probably not going to want a long runner-style - this would be a better option as a hallway rug.

Different types of rugs and different rug materials work better in some rooms/areas than others. The rug’s location should consider foot traffic as well. Will there be lots of feet trampling over the rug every day? If the answer is yes, this immediately determines the quality and material of the rug. You should avoid very cheap, thin rugs as they’ll wear down within a few weeks of constant use. By contrast, a real cowhide rug works best in the most high-traffic areas as the material is incredibly durable and easily withstands repetitive use.

Furthermore, the rug’s location matters when you think about cleaning and maintenance. Will a rug in a bedroom need as much maintenance as one in your living or dining room? You’d have to say no, based purely on the fact that the other two rooms are where you tend to eat and drink more often. This means the rugs will be more prone to crumbs, so you should opt for a style that’s easier for you to clean and vacuum.

What’s the main purpose of the rug?

This consideration goes hand in hand with where you will place the rug. What purpose does the rug serve? You might think this is an odd question but think about the many ways you can utilize a rug in your home. Many people will buy one to deliver a cozy home atmosphere. They want a plush rug to sit in the living room and bring warmth and comfort to the area. As a result, this immediately puts you in mind of different styles or materials. You’re ideally looking for a nice thick-pile rug that’s soft and fluffy underfoot, delivering the ultimate cozy vibes.

Alternatively, you could need a rug to enhance the aesthetic style of a room. Perhaps you want to place a rug beneath your fireplace to create luxurious vibes. You’d need something to make a statement here, so coziness goes out of the window.

Another thing we briefly touched upon was a rug in a hallway. Maybe you want one to stop your hallway from looking bare while also adding a safety element. A long runner provides more grip to the hallway’s surface, so you want something in the right material and durability.

You could even choose a rug to go on top of another rug! The idea might sound bizarre to some, but these are known as accent rugs. They complement the other rug, which typically means you need one in the same shape but just a bit smaller and normally in a different color. The point is that different rugs are more suitable for different situations. Figure out your rug’s purpose, and you’ll soon discover which styles and types are better than others.

How big does the rug need to be?

Naturally, your answer to this question will depend on your answer to the two previous questions. The rug’s location and purpose will dictate its size - but this can also determine which rugs might be better than others.

As an example, let’s say you want to put a rug in your bedroom to go under your bed. Its purpose is to provide some extra warmth and comfort to the room. The ideal size in this situation will cover the entire space under your bed with room around the sides for you to step on when you get out of bed. If it’s too small, it’ll look silly - but if it’s too big, you may as well just slap some carpet down.

Then, consider a rug in your living room. One that fits under your coffee table may need to be a different size to one that goes in front of the fireplace or under your sofa. You may even want a large one that covers the sofa AND coffee table. Some rugs look better in different sizes than others. For instance, cowhide rugs tend to look best in medium sizes because of the natural way they splay out. They’d be great as coffee tables or dining table rugs but probably aren’t big enough as a bedroom floor rug.

Similarly, oval-shaped rugs often look better in smaller or medium sizes, while large square/rectangular ones are the best large rugs.

Does the rug need to be made of a certain material?

There’s some correlation between this question and the others. If you need a rug for warmth, then it ideally needs to be made out of very soft and insulative materials. However, this question will mainly revolve around your personal preferences or lifestyle choices. If you follow a certain diet, then some rug materials are out of the question. Likewise, if you have allergies, you should pick hypoallergenic materials for your rug. The material could be a minor consideration for some but a larger one for others.

So, how do you choose the perfect rug for your home? Your task is to take these questions and provide the answers. As you make your way through them, you’ll slowly realize the type of rugs that make the most sense for you and your home. You can create a shortlist, check out some samples, and buy the rug of your dreams!
