A Home That Can Weather Any Storm

When storm season rolls in, you want to make sure that you and your family as safe as houses, and that means…well, it means ensuring your house is actually well-equipped to weather anything that Mother Nature decides to throw at it from strong winds to flood-levels of water. Here’s how you can do just that:

1. Your Roof is Good, Right?

Your roof is the MVP when it comes to keeping out rain, hail, and even those rogue tree branches that love to go flying in high winds. If you haven’t had your roof inspected in a while, it’s time to call in a top-rated roofing company. A solid roof can handle the toughest storms, but a worn-out one? Not so much. A roofing pro can make sure your shingles are secure, your flashing isn’t loose, and there aren’t any sneaky leaks waiting to turn into indoor puddles. Trust us, it’s easier to fix things now than to be catching rainwater in buckets during a storm.

2. Fortify Your Windows

When wind and debris start whipping around, your windows are next in the line of fire. Make sure they’re up to the task with storm shutters or, for extra protection, impact-resistant glass. Don’t want to invest in new windows just yet? No problem. Even just sealing up any gaps with weatherproofing tape can make a huge difference. And if a big storm’s coming, keep some plywood handy to board up windows for added peace of mind.

3. Secure the Gutters

Gutters might not be glamorous, but they do an essential job: directing water away from your home. Clogged or broken gutters can cause water to spill over and pool around your foundation, which can lead to flooding and damage. Give your gutters a good cleaning, and make sure they’re firmly attached to your home. While you’re at it, check that downspouts are directing water a good distance away – no one wants a backyard lake after a storm.

4. Tidy Up the Yard

Look around your yard and make sure there’s nothing lying around that could turn into a flying missile during a storm. Patio furniture, garden tools, kids’ toys – anything that’s loose can become a hazard. Move items indoors or secure them to prevent damage. And while you’re at it, trim any tree branches that are too close to your home. The last thing you want is a branch coming through your window unannounced.

5. Sump Pumps Are Your Basement’s Best Friend

If you’ve got a basement, a sump pump is a must-have for stormy weather. This little hero helps keep your basement dry by pumping out water that might otherwise pool and flood. Make sure your sump pump is in working order before any big storms hit, and consider a backup power source in case the power goes out.

6. Check the Foundation

Your foundation is literally holding everything up, so give it a quick once-over. Look for cracks or gaps, and seal them with waterproofing material to keep moisture out. This small step can save you from water damage and keep your home strong when things get rough outside.
