How to Correctly Measure Dimensions for Food Paper Boxes

Getting box measurements correct is vital for custom packaging design. Boxes sometimes serve as the first line of defense for their contents, so getting your packaging dimensions right the first time is crucial. But while learning how to measure a box correctly may sound simplistic, there is more to it than you might consider. You can get in touch with a supplier to learn more.

Measuring the Dimensions of a Box

The dimensions of a box are straightforward: length x width x height. This is also the format a product packaging provider will use to manufacture your custom boxes. The length of a box is the longest side when you look at the box from the top, and the width is the shortest side. Finally, the height is the side that is perpendicular to length and width. Height can also be referred to as depth. In the case of an upward-facing or tall box, depth is the largest dimension, while the width and length are smaller.

For example, if your box is fourteen inches long by seven inches wide by three inches high, you will record the measurement as 14 " x 7" x 3".

The Importance of Internal Dimensions

The industry standard for packaging dimensions depends on internal measurements. The distinction between the external and internal dimensions is vital for obtaining packaging that you will use for your products. Basically, the internal dimensions are much more accurate for your product and manufacturer.

To measure, place the box in front of you and measure the inside length, width, and depth to the nearest tenth of an inch. Always make sure to round up. If you still need to be 100 percent sure what size to order, most packaging suppliers will happily allow you to send a sample of your product for proper measurement.

Using interior measurements for custom packaging will ensure a perfect fit for your products, regardless of how thick your custom paper packaging walls are. If you use exterior dimensions, you may risk getting boxes that are too small, with your products not fitting, or being squeezed tightly up against the side of the packaging. This is why most suppliers require that packaging dimensions be taken from the interior, not the exterior.

Determining the Volume of a Box

Learning how to calculate the volume of a box correctly can make it easier to determine how much space it will take up. This is most useful when finding out how many boxes can be stacked on a pallet or how much space every unit will occupy in a warehouse.

Calculating the volume of a box is simple. All you need to do is multiply all the dimensions of your packaging: Length x Width x Depth = Volume. However, keep in mind that the final measurement will be cubed. (cm3, m3, or whatever unit you used to calculate the dimensions of your box).

To wrap it up, custom packaging specific to your needs will ensure product protection while improving your bottom line. A snug fit will significantly reduce the amount of packaging material needed, ultimately creating a more sustainable package. And that is a win. Now that you have a better insight into how to measure the dimensions of your package, you can apply these techniques to any packaging project you need.
