How Should You Determine If College Is The Correct Path For You?

There’s a quiet kind of pressure many people feel when they finish high school or sixth form, depending on how your country's educational pathway has been structured. For years, the message has been pretty much the same, that college is the next logical step, the best way to unlock opportunity and jobs, and a wise route to a stable future. For some, that’s entirely true. But its not for everyone. Worse still, you can go there at any age, not just now. Even worse still, if you don’t choose that, you’re liable to begin working. It’s a lot to take on.

The thing is, college can be a meaningful experience for the right person as long as they’re in love with the topic they hope to study. That said, it can also be an expensive detour if you’re only going because you feel like you’re supposed to. That doesn’t make the institution itself bad, far from it, but it does mean it’s worth pausing and asking yourself what you want from it. If you’re feeling unsure, that’s not a failure of direction, just usually a sign you’re thinking carefully.

So, how do you sort through the noise and figure out whether this path is really for you? Here’s where to begin.

What’s The Purpose, Not Just The Process?

College is often talked about like it’s a the be-all and end all of your academic career, but it’s better to view it in terms of what it unlocks. So for example, does the field you want to work in require a degree? Do you work well in structured academic settings and are you happy to network? Do you just want to party? It’s okay to say yes to that one a little bit, although remove the “just” if you please!

If you can figure out a specific purpose that college helps fulfill, it’s usually a good sign. For example, some might consider going to film school as not being conducive to working in the field given how competitive arts are, but you’ll network with other people and no doubt thrive bcause of that. That said, if the best you’ve got is “I guess I’ll figure it out while I’m there,” then it may be worth stepping back for a moment.

Are You Being Honest About The Financial Reality?

It’s not the most exciting part of the conversation, but it’s one of the most important. The cost of higher education can be quite intensive, and while it’s sometimes worth the investment, it shouldn’t be entered into blindly, even if your parents have saved for you to go. If you’re taking on student loan debt, make sure you understand what that means in real terms, such as how long repayment might take, what your monthly budget will look like, and whether your chosen field will realistically help you pay it off. You don’t need to plan it perfectly right now, but it does show wise planning.

Could A Different Path Serve You Better Right Now?

Sometimes the best decision is just a delayed one, even if that’s just taking a gap year and earning so you don’t have to work at college. You might gain maturity from entering the workforce, exploring a trade, or building a portfolio in a creative field. These are not lesser options. It’s okay if you delay it.

With this advice, we hope you can determine if college is the correct path for you.
