Things To Know Before Buying A Bed Frame

Considering a bed frame can be a significant investment, it’s important to understand the different styles available and what makes the perfect choice for your bedroom. Many homeowners start by exploring options like a stylish Australian queen bed frame to find a balance between comfort, durability, and design. Here is everything you need to know before buying your next bed frame.

Types of Bed Frame

Firstly, you need to be aware of multiple types of bed frames, each with pros and cons. They differ in bed sizes, comfort levels, looks, and overall feel; here are the most common types.

Platform

A platform frame is simply one on which you place a mattress, with nothing else required. It is one of the most common frames, giving you a sleek and sophisticated look. A platform frame also tends to be firmer and has a lower height than other frames on this list, which could make it difficult for those who struggle to get in and out of bed.

Panel

A panel bed frame is designed to hold both a mattress and a box spring. It typically has a headboard and sometimes a footboard. It is made from wood or metal and will also sometimes have handrails, making it great for young children.

They are also usually higher than most other frames, making them ideal for those who find it challenging to get in and out of bed. However, if you don’t already own one, you must budget for a box spring, as these frames require them.

Four-Poster

A four-poster is easily one of the most stylish and beautiful bed frames. It offers exceptional comfort with added drama, which can turn your bed into a centerpiece for the room it is in.

It is important to note that four-poster beds aren’t great for bedrooms with low ceilings, as they often make the room feel much smaller. However, a more minimalist style of frame can work in small spaces, as opposed to the classic, chunkier style.

Sleigh

Similar to a four-poster bed, a sleigh bed frame is one that commands attention when it is in a room. Typically made of wood, the sleigh design incorporates a large, curved headboard, as well as a smaller, curved footboard.

Once again, a sleigh bed is quite large and is not the best for smaller rooms, but there are some designs that are less chunky and imposing that may suit medium and slightly smaller rooms.

Adjustable

An adjustable bed frame is a far more modern and tech-friendly frame. In many ways, an adjustable bed is lie a hospital bed; you can raise and lower sections with the touch of the button, allowing you to lie on an incline to read or watch TV, or to help you get out of bed.

You need to be aware of the fact that even though adjustable beds are incredible, they are almost always more expensive than most other types of frames. This is especially true when choosing a queen or king-sized adjustable bed.

Trundle

Finally, a trundle frame is ideal for those living in apartments or smaller spaces. A trundle frame includes a shelf underneath the bed that can pull out, and have a mattress placed in it, giving you two beds for the price of one.

It is more common to find single mattress trundle frames, and you can also find ones that have legs on the bottom of the shelf, allowing you to raise the second mattress to the same height as the other, giving you a double bed.

What to Remember

There are a few other things to consider when choosing a bed frame. They aren’t all made equally, and it is important to be aware of the differences.

Frame-Type & Comfort

The type of frame you choose is often linked to the level of comfort it provides. If the frame isn’t sturdy enough, or designed correctly, it won’t fully support the mattress, meaning it will lose its shape, become more uncomfortable over time, and can cause back, shoulder and neck problems.

Construction

Always pay attention to how well a frame is made, and what it is made from. Frames are meant to be something you keep for several years, and their construction should not only provide that, but also the best comfort level possible over that time.

Box Spring or No Box Spring

The best thing about most modern bed frames is that they often don’t require a bed spring. Many frames will have the support you need to not require one, but there are still plenty of designs and styles that you can put a box spring on if you so desire.

Budget

When it comes to budgeting for a frame, be prepared to spend more than you think. As mentioned before, a frame is an investment, and a high-quality, well-made one can last you several years, even decades.

While you can save money by buying one second-hand, it is vital to thoroughly inspect it to ensure it is still in good condition, hasn’t warped or cracked in any way, and still offers the level of support you need.
