How Your Child Can Stay Safe at Summer Camp

Having a child off to summer camp might be great, but it is something that is going to make many parents very nervous. First and foremost, you want to know that your child is safe while away from home. Proper preparation and communication, of course, will make you feel a lot better about having your child at a camp. Here's how to ensure your kid's safety at a summer camp.

Choosing the Right Camp

The first step towards ensuring the safety of your child is the selection of the appropriate camp. Camps require a lot more planning than perusal of their websites to get an idea about their policies, staff, qualifications, and emergency handling procedures. If you come across a camp that is fully accredited by some well-known organization, then that probably will be able to prove they are very serious about the issue of safety. Also, take the location of the camp into consideration, the facilities available and the staff to the number of children present in the camp's ratio. The safety and quality of a camp's staff are excellent areas of a camp's reputation in which to research. This alone brings peace of mind.

How to Prepare Your Child for Camp

Preparation is the key to a safe camp experience. Discuss with your child what to expect at the camp: daily schedules, activities, and camp rules especially. Make sure he understands how important it is to respect the rules of the camp and the camp counselors. Teach him how to take care of medical issues or allergies by himself while he's away at camp if he has any. Equipping your child with knowledge and tools that he needs to be safe will help in his being more confident and self-reliant.

Communicating with Camp Staff

Always before the start of the camp, do communicate any special needs that may be required for your child with the staff members. In case of any medical condition, allergy, or diet restriction that your child has, inform the camp ahead of time and ensure that they are trained and prepared with such cases. Provide them with all necessary medical information, like who to contact in case of an emergency and how medications are supposed to be given. This open line of communication allows the camp staff to better care for your child.

Pack Smart and Safe

One of the biggest factors in your child's safety is often what they pack for camp. Be sure to include all of the key gear, including sunscreen, insect repellent, supplies to supplement the first-aid kit and proper clothing for activities in which they'll be participating. Label everything with camp labels, so all your child's things are easily recognizable and less likely to walk off. Show your child how to use items she is bringing—for example, applying sunscreen or recognizing the signs of dehydration. Proper packing sets the stage for a safe camp experience.

Teaching Personal Safety Skills

Empowering your child with personal safety skills is critical. Teach how to recognize unsafe situations and that it is important to say something if they feel uncomfortable. It will also be good to talk about the buddy system and why your child should never let their friend be left behind during activities. Also, you will want to review some simple first aid with your child, like what they should do if they get a minor cut or if they are stung by a bee. Perhaps one of the most important safety measures you can teach your child is to simply pay attention to what is going on around them and trust their instincts.

Staying Connected While at Camp

While giving your child some independence, being in touch during camp actually can help to ensure their safety. Learn the policy of a camp and how often you can reach your child. Regular check-ins can allow both the parent and child some peace of mind, also giving your child the opportunity to voice some concerns. Many camps offer portals or regular updates that will keep a parent informed about their child's activities and well-being. This allows a parent, on some level, to stay connected and monitor the safety of his or her child while he or she has fun.

Think of the safety of your child's summer camp as multi-dimensional: careful planning combined with open communication and teaching personal safety skills. From picking the right camp and preparing your child to communicating with staff, packing smart, and keeping connected, there's how to help create a safe environment for your child to enjoy all that summer camp has in store. Follow these, and your child shall be all set for a fun, safe, and memorable camp experience.
