Justice Derailed: Exploring the Profound Impact of Wrongful Convictions

A 2018 study by Charles Loeffler and colleagues reported an overall wrongful conviction rate of about 6% in a general state prison population. Although wrongful convictions have a significant impact on the lives of the ones convicted, it is just one side of the story.

Wrongful convictions also have a significant impact on the legal system as well. This impact does not only affect the legal practice today but also defines its future.

Both the legal system and individuals at risk of wrongful convictions want to know what can be done about this problem. If you want to learn more, here is all you need to know.

Lack of Trust in the Justice System

Everyone knows the importance of law in their life. It is what distinguishes humans from all other forms of life on earth. Without law, we may be as unruly as animals. While law gives many people hope every day, the impact of wrongful convictions cannot be overlooked.

Wrongful convictions are a leading cause of people losing trust in the justice system. It undermines the belief that the legal system delivers justice, leading to skepticism and distrust. Over time, this issue can lead the general public to give up trusting the legal system at all.

Trauma and Injustice

It is hard to think about being in a position where you are accused of something you have not done and even being punished for it. If you have never been in the same position, you cannot feel the pain of someone who goes through this ordeal, at times for decades.

People who face wrongful convictions often face trauma and psychological suffering. In addition, their families and loved ones also share this trauma in different ways. Such gaps in life are hard and even impossible to recover for many innocent convicts.

Wastage of Resources

Wrongfully convicted people are not the only innocent people who suffer because of this ordeal. Taxpayers of a country also suffer by their side as their money and hopes for a brighter future are spent on important endeavors such as investigating, prosecuting, and incarcerating innocent individuals.

Since wrongful convictions are more common than often acknowledged, resources are often spent on rectifying these efforts through appeals and compensation. This problem only adds to the suffering and corruption of innocent people and taxpayers.

Impact on the Loved Ones

When someone is wrongfully convicted, they are not the only ones who suffer because of this problem. Wrongful convictions also impact victims and their families in several ways. They suffer financially, mentally, and emotionally to unimaginable extent.

The unfortunate thing is that meanwhile, the true perpetrators remain free to commit more crimes and live there without the fear of accountability. Such injustice is enough for anyone to give up hope in their justice system.

Such injustice leaves victims and their loved ones without closure. It can feel horrible to know that your loved one is suffering away from you even when it is not their fault.
