Baby Bean Doll (Free Amigurumi Crochet Pattern, Human Body Doll Base)

Dear fellow crocheters,

I'm thrilled to share with you my newest amigurumi design, the Baby Bean Doll!  This little doll will be part of a human body doll base series.  There's more to come, along with patterns of clothing and accessories for you to dress your little Baby Bean in... including this free Basic Dress pattern

As you can see, this little doll has a large head, and tiny body and limbs to go with.  Kind of oddly charming, in my opinion!

One thing I love about this design is that it requires less sewing than traditional amigurumi projects, where you're crocheting each part separately and then sewing them together.  As a crocheter who tries to avoid sewing and attaching pieces together whenever possible, I designed this doll so that the major parts are crocheted in one piece!  For example, the head and upper body is in one piece.  The legs and lower body are also done in one piece.  This way, the doll has a cleaner, seamless look, as opposed to having the legs and heads crocheted separately to be sewn to the body after, if that makes sense!

What I love MORE about this little doll base, though, is how versatile it is!  You can use different yarn colors, add embellishments, and give it all sorts of your own personal flair to make this doll unique.  You can turn it into a mini-me as a gift for yourself or a child who would love to have their little pocket-sized versions!  I think it also makes great gifts for family and friends, as you can customize it into family dolls or even wedding dolls.

To view the different clothing, accessories, and designs I have made for Baby Bean, scroll down to the "Clothing & Variations" section below the written pattern!

Here's Coral the Mermaid (Free Pattern), pleased to meet her land-walking, leg-having friend!

If you'd like to get some inspiration from others, feel free to check out the Creation Gallery!  I'll be adding photos of Baby Beans from around the world, such as this cute little Anna made by Jenny S.!

So... How would you dress up your little Baby Bean?

Introduction:
The Baby Bean Doll Base is an adorable, little doll that is quick and easy to crochet! Minimal sewing is required, as the head and upper body are crocheted in one piece, the legs and lower body crocheted in one piece, with separate arms to attach. This doll base makes a lovely gift for children who enjoy pocket-sized toys. It is very versatile, as you can use different yarn colors, accessories, and embellishments to customize this doll. Clothing can be made so that little girls and boys can play dress up, too! Make a cute “mini me” for kids, your family, or friends, and they’ll be sure to love this sweet, unique, and handmade gift!

Note: Arms are made using the i-cord technique. Click here for the i-cord video tutorial, or scroll down to find it under the 'Related Videos' section.

Ch 3. Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, YO, pull up a loop, insert hook into next ch, YO, and pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook)
R1: Drop 2 loops from hook, but hold onto them tightly with your non-hook hand so that they do not come undone. YO, pull through loop on hook. Insert hook into first dropped loop, YO, pull through. (2 loops on hook.) Insert hook into second dropped loop, YO, and pull through. (3 loops on hook)
R2-R6: Repeat R1.
To finish, YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Fasten off with a long tail for sewing to the body.

~ FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS~

  1. Using a yarn needle, sew the arms to the upper body.
  2. Make sure the doll’s body is stuffed firmly, but be careful not to overstuff and stretch the stitches.
  3. Sew the upper body to the lower body, and you are done!

Need help with joining the legs together to create the lower body?
This seamless, no sew, crochet-in-one-piece crochet technique is a great way to avoid sewing a bunch of little parts together and create a clean, beautiful look for your amigurumi doll's legs!

Need help with the i-cord technique for the arms?
It is so quick and easy once you get the hang of it, and is much faster than crocheting in the round!
