Super Simple Beginner's Beanie

Good day, friends!

Are any of you looking for a warm, winter hat to keep you cozy during this cold season?  If so, I'd love to share with you how I whipped up this super simple and beginner-friendly beanie using just one skein of yarn and about a half-hour to spare!

Finished Measurements:
  • Brim circumference: approximately 20 inches (51 centimeters). Can be stretched to fit 24 inches (61 centimeters)
  • Beanie height: approximately 7.5 inches (19 centimeters)

Level:
  • Beginner! Requires familiarity with the stitches and terms used below.

Stitches/Terms Used (US Terminology):
  • MR: magic ring (a.k.a. magic circle, magic loop)
  • Ch: chain
  • Sc: single crochet
  • Dc: double crochet
  • Sl st: slip stitch
  • Inc: increase (two sc in same stitch)
  • Inc-dc: increase double crochet (two dc in same stitch)
  • BLO: back loops only

Materials:

Before you begin, here are some CUSTOMIZATION IDEAS!
  • Use a different yarn color for the rim.  You can pick an analogous color, or maybe a contrasting one.  (Are you a passionate sports fan? Perhaps you can use your favorite team colors!)
  • Attach buttons or embellishments to your beanie.
  • Embroider designs onto your beanie.
  • Weave a ribbon through the rim.
  • Sew a leather label to the rim.
  • Add a pom-pom. (Here are three different methods to making a pom-pom.)

~ CROCHET DIRECTIONS ~

Note: Each row will start with chain (ch) 3, and end with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first stitch (st).

ADULT SIZE:

R1: Start with a MR.  Ch 3, and insert 12 dc in the MR. Join with a sl st to the first dc. (12 sts)
R2: Ch 3, inc-dc around. *Join. (24 sts)
R3: Ch 3, (dc, inc-dc) x 12. *Join. (36 sts)
R4: Ch 3, (dc 8, inc-dc) x 4. *Join. (40 sts)
R5-R8: Ch 3, dc around. *Join. (40 sts)
R9-R10: Ch 1, sc around in BLO. *Join. (40 sts)
Fasten off and weave in the ends.

That's it, you're done! Easy as pie!

Using this method (dc in joined rounds followed by sc in BLO), you can easily adjust the size of the beanie by using different hook sizes and yarn weights, as well as modify the stitch and/or row count.

For example, here's what I did to make a beanie for a newborn baby...

NEWBORN SIZE:

Use worsted medium weight (4) yarn and a 5.00mm crochet hook.
R1: Start with a MR.  Ch 3, and insert 10 dc in the MR. Join with a sl st to the first dc. (10 sts)
R2: Ch 3, inc-dc around. *Join. (20 sts)
R3: Ch 3, (dc, inc-dc) x 10. *Join. (30 sts)
R4: Ch 3, (dc 2, inc-dc) x 10. *Join. (40 sts)
R5-R8: Ch 3, dc around. *Join. (40 sts)
R9-R10: Ch 1, sc around in BLO. *Join. (40 sts)
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
